To break down borders and realise that we are one species and then the true patriotism comes from pride and love of the human race, not from the tribes of which we currently are divided, open your eyes your mind will see! - ME

Patriotism is not a "disease of the ignorant". You can be informed and also be patriotic. You can be critical of the government, of war and of politics in general and still love your country and be patriotic. Patriotism can take many forms. Your statement in and of itself makes you actually sound like the ignorant one here, no offense.

Xenophobia, which is probably what you have in mind, is another issue altogether.

Nationalism is a disease of the ignorant. Patriotism is a good thing.

    You stole my post!

Too many people confuse patriotism with nationalism.

I wouldn't base my opinion on a song, but I do believe that Patriotism's day is over. It had it's place back when communication and transportation and technology weren't what they are now, but it's pretty played now.

Of course, you will have someone agree with that in one breath and then complain about jobs moving out of the country in the next. They are the same thing, people.

I care about people, not Americans. If the job goes somewhere else to someone who needs it, then more power to them.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.

When i say 'ignorant' i mean not looking at the big picture which is looking past borders and seeing the human race as one nation, understand now????

so by that line of reasoning, being open to the human condition outside one's borders makes you unpatriotic then?

one can be intellectually saavy and feel love for one's country at the same time, they aren't mutually exclusive.

    exactly.

and patriotism and nationalism, NOT the same thing. besides the fact, that patriotism, as a definition, has been severly altered....best to look towards the true meaning of the word. it's a good thing.

  • "The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair."

    - Henry L. Mencken:

"Each man must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, which course is patriotic and which isn't. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide against your conviction is to be an unqualified and excusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let me label you as they may."

If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

I'm all for opening our minds to beyond the tribal mindset. Anyone else?
