"As hard as it may be to conceive, this is the actual origin of our current Thanksgiving Day holiday. Many American Indian people these days do not observe this holiday, for obvious reasons. I see nothing wrong with gathering with family to give thanks to our Creator for our blessings and sharing a meal. I do, however, hope that Americans as a whole will one day acknowledge the true origin of this holiday, and remember the pain, loss, and agony of the Indigenous people who suffered at the hands of the so-called 'pilgrims'. It is my hope that children's plays about 'the first Thanksgiving', complete with Indians and pilgrims chumming at the dinner table, will someday be a thing of the past. Why perpetuate a lie? Let us face the truths of the past, and give thanks that we are learning to love one another for the rich human diversity we share."

That's actually not a bad statement, but I don't feel that anyone is still "perpetuating a lie". I think most people can admit that what happened to Native Americans was wrong ... It is indeed time to move on from the conflictual aspects (like having a bird every single Thanksgiving), and start mending relationships.

I'm thankful for a lot of things. I have no guilt over things for which I have no responsibility.

    this is quite true.
even my own ancestors had nothing to do with it. my family on both sides, immigrated to the united states way, way later in the nation's history. my father didn't come to this country until 1921.

however, i certainly do appreciate the validity in the idea of a day of 'mourning'...it is not simply about guilt, it's more about the truth. and there really is no denying that european settlers coming to this continent led to serious native american genocide. we as a country at teh very least need to always acknowledge that.

personally, i do celebrate thanksgiving, b/c sure...we look at it not so much from the american history of it, or the skewed 'first thanksgiving' picture we all were fed in elementary school.....but more from the broad 'giving thanks' for family, for friends, for a prosperous life, etc.
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow

Miller, I hope you know a great number of people here do not feel kind thoughts towards you, you are constantly negative and say stupid, outrageous things and as a good friend on the boards recently told me, you are probably one of the only people from the boards who I would shun in person.

I know from my own education that it is a time when the pilgrims and the natives shared the wealth of the harvest. I think it is probably more deeply rooted in the harvest itself, among all people. It is an American holiday, yet, more than likely it has its beginnings long before America became a nation.

Dude, I think you may want to re-evaluate that education. It was basically a party that three ships found land. They were at the end of their collective rope, and then land appeared. While it is true they 'shared the wealth of the harvest' at the beginning, I think the tainted blankets negate that just a tad. We fucked 'em, and you know what is the best? They are fucking us right back with the casinos. It doesn't make up for what we did, but I'm glad they are getting theirs--generally.

I disagree with you for the very reason you can find for yourself.

I'll do that. I'm going to do that right now. Seriously, I'm not going to waste any time, and I am going to find it myself. I mean why waste time chit-chatting, I need to find this myself...again, after I already learned it years ago. Wow, I don't know why I am wasting time typing this. I should really go find this 'reason' myself. God, i'm such a procratinator. I really need to do something about this, I mean I always put things off. I am DEFINITELY going to get on this tomorrow.

Oh man. That was hilarious. I'm laughing as I type this.

    Oh...what do I reply?

    Hehee? LOL?

    seconded.
  • The truth is that we really don't know what occured at the first Thanksgiving. There probably wasn't even a Turkey.

All I know is that in its present day form it is perfect.

Actually, it would have been perfect if BC would have beat Miami by 4. But hey, these are little things.

Lol, just get another beer out of the fridge, and make yourself a turkey sandwich. Everything will be better.
