It was even funny to me at the time...after I was finished hiding behind various trees in the yard, I was giggling my ass off. :p But this morning I was thinking...seriously WTF! :D
I think that most of us probably have some experience in man to man fireworks combat.

I thought it was interesting last night while I sat back and watched fireworks that we are perpetuating the feeling of patriotism through the symbolism of war. With “Bombs bursting in air” we celebrate our country. It seems like a more peaceful sort of symbolism might be more appropriate.

With that in mind, I think I'm going to add all fireworks to my list of boycotts.

Why would you boycotting something that is enjoyed and loved by people around the world (especially small children) make any difference to countries dropping bombs on each other?
There is something truly unifying about fireworks so why would you want to boycott unity?
By all means boycott bombs. Hell get rid of all bombs, bullets, guns, weapons of any kind but to boycott fireworks? If symbolism is your thing go for it, but I think it's gonna take a lot more than that to get people to stop dropping bombs on innocent civilians. Oh and it probably wouldn't do any harm to fight to tone down patriotic fervor. That's the kind of stuff that leads to bombs being dropped on others. Much more dangerous than fireworks.
    NOPE!!!

I almost did. My hand was completely charred and senseless, I couldn't feel a thing and immediately thought I lost my hand. I had taken a screacher and wrapped it in duct tape. I lit it and was about to chuck it, as I reached back to toss it, it exploded in my hand, next to my ear.

Oh, trust me. I'm fighting to tone down patriot fervor all the time. And I agree, bombs are worse than fireworks ;)

It occured to me whilst I was reading your initial post that I would probably be over fireworks too if they were utilized here in Australia to further nationlistic fervour in a bad way. But it mostly seems here, so far, that they are simply part of a celebration. One of the greatest things about them when we have them here is how people come out of their houses to watch and all stare up at the sky together. Neighbours sharing a common pleasant event.
That's a good thing. It encourages positive interaction. But I can certainly think of instances where they would be inappropriate. I just hope that we never manage to use them then. :)

I witnessed a combination of the two! There was a girl at a party with ridiculously long fingernails, someone handed her a lit firecracker ... I don't know if she was stupid (possible), drunk (highly likely), or just didn't realize it was lit, but she stood there holding onto it until it exploded, blowing her fingernails to smithereens. A guy standing nearby had to go to the emergency room because he got fingernail shrapnel in his eye.

    ...
I think the connection of Independence Day and Patriotism... Patriotism to War... War to Iraq... Iraq to 'Shock and Awe' makes the fireworks connect to bombs and missiles.
The fact is fireworks are peaceful uses for gun powder. We see them on New Years... at Disneyland... when the home team hits a homer. I don't mind the fireworks.
I am put off when people try to say this War in Iraq is making me safer... because my logic tells me that making more people hate me... and strenghtening the resolve of the guy that wants to hit me in my homeland doesn't make me safer.

That sounds like a true party killing event!!! Bad luck for the dude.

my uncle got shot in the eye with a bottle rocket. it messed it up pretty bad. he has some sort of stigmatism or something from it. i think buying fireworks is pointless, but id pay to see the big shows by the pros,...

  • My neighbors must be a bit crazy. However they just moved into the house next to me (husband, wife and 10 yr old daughter) and are probably celebrating the new house as well. They lit off about 40-50 fireworks every night for 3 nights in a row. This is a close approximation. A few hours steady each night. All of them those corner store ones. I'm sure it must have cost them about $400 CAD.

    I'm glad it's over.

    with buckshot, in his ass.

If he'd been sent off to Iraq, he'd be worse.

    No?

  • If fireworks were banned the streets would be safer on guyfawkes night. Maybe they should be used by venues but banned from general sale? As for fireworks being a symbol of war, well each to their own I guess.
