Either way, there will be an asterisk in most of our minds. The funny thing, though, is that I find myself pulling for Bonds out of spite to all the people that are so upset.

What bothers me about the outrage is that its only about homers. Nobody cares that pitchers use them to recover from their outings (particularly relievers that pitche multiple games in a row). Where are the boos for Juan Rincon? Steroids are about much more than homers. They are about recovery from injury and workouts and a bit of extra endurance. You know who I suspect of Steroid use? Cal Ripken Jr. Much of his streak came after some prominant olympic 'roid busts. Playing every day is hard. When it was common place to take "greenies", I don't have reason to believe he was not doing it. I can suspect him, if you can suspect McGwire. And I guarantee you Lou Gehrig was not using them (he also was playing much of his streak in immense pain, but that's a different story). The cloud of suspican either needs to hang over everyone or needs to be forgotten. It's MUCH more than homers. (Note that I am not accusing Cal of anything, just saying that the cloud could hang over him as much as anyone else who's head did not grow 7 sizes in the steroid era).
And as a fan of a team that is going to lose a two-time Cy Young winner to salary (and who has watched a well-run A's team make the postseason but not win it all while dumping all sorts of great pitchers due to salary), I say fuck it. Fix the real problem in baseball: The team inequities, which make it less a sport and more a spending contest. (To bring this to the 'Train, make it more socialist, like the NFL). Get me a salary cap and I'll deliver the performance enhancing drugs myself.

I agree that Selig is the worst commissioner in MLB history. But the question is; who is the bigger prick, and Bonds wins that one by a landslide. I think Selig snubbing Bonds is the best thing he's done.

Since he's been in his office, the league has expanded, set all-time attendance records and bounced back from NHL-like TV numbers.
There's also now a steroid testing policy.
The game is becoming more popular globally, as evidenced by the World Baseball Classic and the amount of foreign-born players in the majors.
The new CBA with the MLBPA is a lot less tilted toward the side of the players. There's revenue sharing and a luxury tax on the highest payrolls.
But he also has some serious flaws.
The ASG tie was pathetic but understandable, b/c who really gives a rip shit about an exhibition game? Bud and whatever committee came up with the idea of "This time, it counts" were way off.
Steroids were running rampant during Selig's era. I'm sure he had an inkling. He did nothing. Now every statistic from the late 1980s up to the present and beyond will always be viewed with suspiscion.
And then there was the lockout. That pissed me and millions of other baseball fans off. But it forced both sides to the table to negotiate a new CBA. Losing that World Series was tough to take at the time but looking back on it now, it seemed like a necessary inconvenience.
I would imagine history will look kinder on Bud than the contemporary baseball fan.
But he should still be there when Bonds breaks the record. Passing it off to Robinson or whomever seems pretty weak. But on the other side, Bowie Kuhn blew off Aaron's record-breaking HR and didn't even show.
