What if George W decided Obama was going to smoke McCain in the election, and declared war on Iran to stay in power? Is that legal?

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

He could always try an pull a Bloomberg (Mayor, NYC) and try and get the rules changed ...

but, let's be honest ... if he was in office another 4 years, the impeechement discussions would be pretty heavy right now.

Not anymore. remember Congress granted him the power to use military force when ever and wherever to fight the War on Terror. Congress relinquished that power without a second thought.

fdr had 4 terms....after which the 22nd amendment was inacted
  • President Bush or any future president could use the military if he had the backing of his generals and or senate to setup a dictatorship. It's been done before in history. See Ceasar (Ancient Rome) and Senator Palpatine (long time ago in a galaxy far far away...)
  • yeah good luck with that, georgy. only the delusional conspiracy guys think that could possibly be pulled off right now or soon.

Well, I suppose my next question is "Why?" for Amendment 22. I mean, if the prez is doing a good job, and the majority of voters think he is doing a good job, why make him leave and take your chances on a new candidate with no experience?

I read the reasoning in the Wiki page, but man...the president of the US is quite possibly the single most important job on Earth. Why legislate a mandatory new rookie every four or eight years if your existing leader still has stuff to offer, and has the backing of the people?

If they are bad or unpopular, they will get voted out. If they break the law, then you can impeach them. Basically in the past four years, W hasn't had to give two shits about his popularity because he knows he is on the outs anyways. So there is not much holding him back from making any decision he wants.

    Sorry for soapboxing...

Hopefully C. Powell could raise an army to take the despot down if Bush tried to pull that crap.

You know, I would say "the Constitution forbids it."

But I've said that many times in the past eight years, and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

I highly doubt Bush wants to stay in office. Why have to deal with the monumental failures of the past 8 years when you can retire in luxury and have someone else clean it up for you.

Well there's lots to do after his 8 yrs in office like speaking engagements for what $100,000 a pop or celebrations for his name on buildings, libraries or warships.

He'll be a well celebrated man with his oil and war profiteering friends, lots of time to sit back and have a beer. Why get back in this mess?

    Peace

That is what I have always wondered. I mean considering how much longer the life expectancy is today compared to Roosevelt's time, you would think they would change the rules a bit. I mean you can be elected president at 35 right? So it would be possible to be an awesome canidate, be elected at 35, serve an awesome 2 terms, then retire at 43 and live for another 40-50 years? I know this is an exageration but the whole concept of it doesn't seem right to me.

Didn't Bill Clinton supporters attempt to get the rules changed so he could serve longer. I don't know what went on it's just something I heard on the grapevine.
I can't go the library anymore, everyone STINKS!!
  • actually Bush CAN stay in power!! if martial law is imposed the constitution is suspended and America instantly becomes a dictatorship by way of presidential directives/Executive Orders...many of which were written up during Bush seniors time in office and some by the present day swine

so to answer your question..YES Bush could become "King" of America and stay in power indefinitely since there is nothing in place to re-institute the constitution once we enter martial law!!

HOW MANY OF YOU KNEW THAT??!!
