Anyone else think that disney girl getting fired sends mixed messages?

Now, I'm well aware my brain is a little bit more accepting of nakedness than the average person, or the average parent for that matter, but I can't help but think Disney's swift action against that girl sends a poor message to children, particularly girls.

I'll be the first to admit I've not even seen the picture, so if it is overtly sexual or pornographic, I understand their action...but from what I've heard it's simply a nude photo. Why is our society so against nudity? If she'd been pictured shooting a gun would it have been worse? Are girls supposed to be so ashamed of their bodies that they cannot show them once they reach adulthood? Is this Taliban Afghanistan? I know that last question was loaded but seriously, why draw the line in the sand at nipples and pubic hair?

Ok, it's the weekend, back to drinking...

PS. don't feel free to post a link to the pic for my benefit, I'll probably see it sooner or later.

I just can't believe people are stupid enough to take those type of pictures....they always end up surfacing. I really don't know can't say if she should get fired or not. But it's the Disney channel so it is kind of weird.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.
  • Well, I wasn't sure what you were talking about, but I found a story about it on the net. Apparently it's a girl from the High School Musical thing, and she didn't get fired. It doesn't surprise me she wasn't fired, this High School Musical thing is a monster, I've never seen it, but everywhere I look there is a story on the news, a commercial, or some type of merchandise for it right in my face. And according to the story they are trying to get her, as well as the rest of the cast to sign up for a third of these High School Musical things. While she didn't get fired, I'm sure if it had been a girl tied to a Disney venture that wasn't as successful, she probably would have been fired before she could have gotten her clothes back on from the photo shoot.

I'd say no biggie, it's a private company with an image that caters to children, not the government. As much as they are doing it to protect their image to what they feel their base consumer is, those that disagree can also choose not to buy disney stuff.

guess they want to bow out quickly on this kind of stuff so if she ends up another Britney, they can be disassociated from it, lol

with all the sex and violence on tv, it's kind of rediculous when these companies get up in arms over a simple nude photo

That's the whole point of the High School Musical I guess...parents don't have to worry about all the sex and violence. Do we want a bunch our children to grow up to be like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, who can't keep their clothes on at all? What's wrong with holding people to a high standard? She makes the big dollars because of her pre-teen fans, but I guess she is 18 now, so it is time for her to battle with Britney and Paris.

An 18 yearold sent a nudie pic to her boyfriend, big deal. I could understand if it was a pic like her fisting someone in a Mickey outfit but she didn't do anything wrong.

Ah, well if Disney is now backing her, then a lot of media outlets got their initial report wrong.

I think they would have had every right to fire her if they wanted to.

it's all about image and marketing. When a program caters to the 5-15 age bracket, you can't have your stars going around in their birthday best. That's the sort of stuff Ma and Pa in Iowa tend to get all boycott-y over.

  • Disney is one of the top media corporations in the world. They don't care what messages they send to children. They care about how many people they can sell to advertisers.

Yeah, imagine those crazy Iowa folks not wanting their daughters to grow up to be whores.

If she had been fired, what is the mixed message?
It has nothing to do with being ashamed of the human body.
A mixed message would be if they were churning out mild porn or r-rated movies yet firing her for the leak of this picture.
Personally, it doesn't bother me a bit. Nor am I offended. I have seen the picture. She is just standing there naked in what looks like her bedroom.
What is appalling is the media so concerned with celebrity that they have to show zoomed in pictures of her bikini clad bum on the beach. That is not cool. Leave the poor girl alone to enjoy some time with her boy on the beach.

  • Was this one of their daughters?

No, but it is probably someone that their daughters idolized and want to be like.

maybe if sex wasn't a bad word and seen as something normal and to be discussed openly rather than shameful and to be hidden, their daughters wouldn't go nuts and turn whore the second they get a taste of freedom. coming from a conservative state, i've seen it happen the second they hit college.

i also like how you mention their daughters... not a word on their sons. it's only the women we have to worry about fucking too much!

She was naked, thats it. How do you turn on your significant other, with a picture of you in 8 layers of clothes?

what the hell does someone elses nudity have to do with your daughters morals?

    Geez. Yay for social naziism.

Too bad we can't just force everyone into the same moral ideals huh...then the world would be a better place..

it's a nude photo that no one else should have ever seen. Basically, if one is concerned with someone elses sex life other than thier own...they need to rethink thier own life and start living it.

Wow I mean seriously, it's the same thing every woman in the world sees when they get in the shower, if they are uptight about that, maybe there are a few other issues they need to deal with.

Don't go showing your ankles there either girly....scandalous.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • hmm... I was gonna reply to this but then I realised I don't care either way.

Anybody's stupid to have those kinda pictures floating around of them... especially a celeb.... and especially a celeb whose market is KIDS.

The media are bastards for getting their hands on this picture and printing it.

Disney don't have a contract on what she does outside of work I'm sure but considering her market I don't think many would have been bothered if they did fire her... however they didn't, and I think it's good of them to give her a chance.
