Hey guys, I just wanted people's opinion on a couple of things. First and foremost, I consider myself to be an independent. I am not a Republican, Democrat, or anything else. I would say I am mostly liberal in my views, but have some conservative views as well. I have always considered myself to be very open-minded to things and if I had to fall into a catagory, would probably mostly be a libertarian. I have friends that think very much like me and good friends that have completely different, often times narrow minded views. One of my friends thinks that the Green Party is a closet Socialist party? What do you guys think of this? I mean, I am not saying he is right or wrong, but I have listened to a lot of points made by this party and I tend to agree with a lot of their views. I am definitely not a Socialist, but I believe strongly in the environment, for equal rights for all and that includes gays and lesbians, don't really agree with abortion, but women should have the right to choose, and for limited or no government control...ie "Capitalism" which in my opinion is suffering right now. I am no history major, but Republican parties in the past have been a lot closer to my views than the "overly conservative" republicans currently in office. I believe we live in a society of fear, and it's our fears that are making us trade away our freedoms for the illusion of a safer nation, ie: wire taps, security searches, etc etc. IMO, we are not any safer than before 9-11 and yet the government has received so much more control over our lives. It just feels like corporations and overly right parties are controlling our everyday lives, and I just want someone to stand for what American originally was intended to be. A nation by and for the people. The original position of this country was to defend our nation of too much government and IMO, it seems that our nation is not where it should be. Eddie said a great line once, he said: "We are not living in a democracy, we are attempting a democracy" and I think in a lot of ways he brought up a good point. Discuss...

I think your beliefs are the beliefs of a lot of people. When it comes to the Green Party, I guess some people may see them as socialists. Obviously they tend to the left and their policies are very socialist. BUT.... socialism is soooo different now. I guess one still has a tendency to see this as communism or a strong marxist doctrine. But contemporary socialism is very different. Since the economic boom of the 60's, people have been less inclined to support the traditional doctrines and policies and now socialism is more 'gentle'. Yes, the Green Party, the socialists, and 'leftist' parties have common policies - environment, ecology, decentralisation, deglobalisation, etc.

I know in some countries socialism is a bad word! I guess if they could get over russia and look more into it, opinions may be different! The Green Party suits you? Support it then (if you choose to actively support a party).

I hear what you are saying. I'm not sure.. all I am sure of is that I don't like the current way of things in America because I love this country so much and I want this administration gone. So for the purposes of that, I may just vote Democratic.

That happens a lot... trying to vote a party out. If you know the party of your choice has no chance of winning, you go for the opposition that has most chances. The lesser of two evils!!!! America needs a change.

Agreed!! Though I just hope whoever wins exits Iraq responsibly. I believe we should, but we need to fix the mess we started.

  • Socialism is something we tend to herd together with the most extreme versions that have existed.

When it comes down to the bottom line socialist ideals are simply more ideals in which to agree or disagree with. Some believe they are good, some not so much. The whole idea, no matter what you believe in, is to never let those ideals become oppressive. Nor should they dillute on the well-being of a nation as a whole. Any ideal should inherently be developed into the betterment of any society.
