It's been 15 years since Croatia became the rebuplic - officialy!
So....how do you people, from all around the world, perceive that small country!
The fact I'm from Croatia makes me very curious :)

The only things I know from Croatia is Goran Ivanisevic, their national soccer team, and the tourist spots near the Adriatic Sea...

How do you feel compared to 15 years ago? I cannot imagine a country being ripped apart...

I've heard it's heaven on earth, that the nature is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. And you have a beautiful language, I love Slavic languages.
    THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

Yeah, it really is heaven on earth. We have clean water (we still can drink water directly from the pipe!!), beutiful sea and nature, flora & fauna...

I have seen a travel show that focused on the Plitvice Lakes region. Absolutely beautiful.

I can answer that, because I come from the neigbouring- Slovenia. We are independent from 1991 and share quite some history with Croatia (Yugoslavia).

I guess you know that we have quite some disputes with you (borders - especially sea border, politics) but all in all I think the majority likes you, some really don't though...:)You are seen as open and proud(not in a good way) people as opposition to us - little less open and (reasonably) humble. You are also seen as more "balcan" -meaning less civilised (evolutionary, egocentric thinking but that's how it is)Contradictory-the majority loves balcan music. Slovene folks also look at Croatia as underdeveloped comparing to our country. I spotted that some of our nation felt really proud when we entered the EU and they find it amusing that you are not in it. Go figure.
Slovenian people love to go to the summer vacation to Croatia, but some complain that we are treated differently than other tourists. Sea is the only thing that I think we really wish to have more, so maybe we are a bit jelous, but all in all we worship our nature and think we have a better package than you (mountains, very clean rivers, lakes..) It seems that you can't understand us..but we CAN understand you, languages are very similar..so there is a stereotype that you are not so smart or playing it dumb.
From all of the neigbouring countries..you are not least wanted though.;)
I don't believe that the statements written above are true, but this IS some of the perception...you probably have some about us too.

I hope that was amusing to you ;)

i've heard it's beautiful (although my freinds from that part of the world may have biased me), and it's on my places to go list. politically though, you don't hear much these days (which is probably a good thing), so i don't really know much else about what's going on there

I spent one week in Croatia this past summer!! My first time travelling by myself....

My dad's parents were born in Croatia, but I still knew very little about the country....

Most of the news the world has been exposed to was regarding the war.... not many people are aware of its location, its climate, its history, etc... even me!

So many people asked me why I was going there! Most North American people have no idea about the coastline, the sun, the sea, etc... an amazing travel destination!!

Dubrovnik was spectacular.... seeing building dating from 1200, 1300, 1400 etc gave me shivers... there's nothing that old where I live! :D

some pics, if anyone's interested - first two pages are of Croatia, the third page is of Budapest.

that's pretty much how it's advertised here... I'd say you get a lot of Irish visiting Croatia? There seems to be a few people each year going that I know.
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life
Had I not found this love with you

As a child before the war we always used to holiday in what is now Croatia and it is the most beautiful place and I have some great memories of the times spent there.

I haven't been back since the war but it is definitely where I want to visit again in the next couple of years.
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?
  • didn't read this tread, i'm sure its interesting. what i have to add is that one of the most beautiful and sexy women i've ever known is from croatia. my best friend was married to her, so she's off limits to me unfortunately. but wow Ved... is something special.

One of my best friends is from there. The pictures are breath-taking. The sea coast especially. I'd rather go there than any other place in Europe. Doesn't seem commercialized. Maybe I'll go there and be a "best man" in Montenegro. Nicest, warmest people! Great food. I love sunka and chivape (spelling?). I coughed taking a shot of Rakija and it went up my sinuses. Worst feeling; pain, I have ever had in my life. Snot was coming out of my eyes. My Croatian friend taught me a whole bunch of words and sayings. Now, I can cough them up like a trained parrot to the dismay of others. Really nice, friendly things like "Jebo te saren ker", and "Ja emam sracu 3 metras dugracu". If I haven't befriended my Croatian friends, and their parents/families, my life wouldn't be 1/2 of what it is. Really wonderful people. I'd love to go there.

PS: I love those Mujo/Haso jokes.
