ok so say obama wins the election and becomes president. do you think all talk show hosts will have to walk on eggshells to watch what they say to avoid being singled out as a racist. will letterman and leno be able to conduct their usual skits without fallout from naacp and how many times during his presidency do you think someone/establishment will be accused of something racial.
Oh dear dad

    This is kind of silly.

If Leno or Letterman had a skit about Obama (or anyone else) that was racist in tone, before or after the election and regardless of who wins, there would be fallout.

If they make the usual jokes that they do about politicians, there will be no complaints from the naacp, or anyone else for that matter.

Comedians/talk show hosts, etc., consistently make fun of people of all races and ethnic backgrounds. It's when they make fun OF the race/ethnic background that there is a problem. There is no need to walk on eggshells; simply choosing not to be an ignorant asshole will do.

    duh.

yeah who would have known they couldn't say he was articulate...early on a reporter said that and was blasted for it being a racist remark.
it didn't blow up in the media as much as the imus comments did but they tried to push it.

It wasn't a reporter that said that; it was a (now former) candidate for the 08 election. And in the context of what he said, although I don't believe it was intended to be racist (at least not on a conscious level), it was an ignorant thing to say.

why is being called articulate an ignorant thing?

Did you actually hear/read the actual statement? I'm starting to think you haven't. Here it is. (BTW, it was Senator Joe Biden who made this statement.)

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."

It's not the fact that he said Obama was articulate. It's the way that, within the context of the rest of the sentence, the words "articulate and bright and clean" were used in a way that appeared to be a juxtaposition against the words "African-American". In other words, it was like saying Obama was a *rare* black man that by some miracle happened to also be articulate clean and bright.
  • i can see it now news reports: headlines " obama was swift to decide ____ . "
sharpton : " what's swift supposed to mean are you saying he's faster than the former white president "
headline : " obama takes well needed break at camp david "
sharpton : what's well needed mean..is he more tired than any of the former white presidents?
    headline: " obama enjoys outdoor B-BQ "
sharpton : what's this? the former white presidents never enjoyed a B-BQ before?

    that's ridiculous.

yes i saw the footage...it was a while ago but don't remember it worded like that. i remember it as him saying he's a smart articulate good looking guy.. i don't remember clean being in there. and the way i took it as he was an older man speaking of a younger man having the qualities that obama has, and being that young. not as being surprised because he was black.

Well, first of all, you didn't see footage, because it was a printed article. You probably saw footage of Biden (a senator, not a reporter) defending himself. Secondly, it was worded exactly like that. I copied and pasted.

i'm pretty sure i saw the actual footage of the interview on bill o'reilly or some other news. i don't remember seeing him defending himself. and just having to defend yourself over complimenting someone and having them blow it out of context is exactly what i'm talking about.

  • i just researched it to refresh my memory and it seems several people were using the word articulate while describing his attributes not just the one source ; here's exactly the way i heard it, i copied and pasted it :
" But his biggest advantage could be his persona – young, attractive, articulate, a fresh face " .
nothing but love coming there from my perspective, how it could be perceived as a racist remark baffles the hell out of me.

In that case, I think Bush is the first Irishman who doesn't walk around in a kilt and get shitfaced at pubs all night....complimentary on my part, right?

most irish people are very articulate drinkers and shouldn't be made fun of like that.

That is most definitely not the statement that caused the problem.

I copied and pasted the statement exactly as it appeared in the New York Observer. Maybe you heard Biden (or someone else, since you seem to believe it was a reporter that said it) make a similar comment about Obama while also using the word "articulate". But you didn't *hear* the actual comment that was *printed* in the New York Observer that was responsible for starting the entire controversy.

You've got to get your facts straight if you're really going to understand what happened. :)
