as a rancher; i can see the purpose. i don't believe in branding or ear tags but common practices are making this necessary. originally used to fight theft of livestock; we can now trace an animal back to a certain farm or ranch. this would be great in the event a disease was found in the food chain. the problems i see is that once the animal is killed; the hide is removed and all identifying markers are gone. the small farmers have been using ear tags for over 30 years. i don't see it effecting them as much. but for ranchers who raise dangerous animals like i do; it's causing a big problem.

Actually, mandatory animal ID will help keep small farmers in business. Besides, the obvious disease tracking issues, it also means that consumers will be able to certify that their meat is "Made in the USA" as opposed to, say, Argentina.

i don't agree. i can import cattle from argentina and once customs are cleared; i own the IDs thus the cattle becomes "american". when i take those cattle to market; they are american raised cattle. the ID system isn't like drivers licenses which identifies each animal. it only identifies ownership.
the bottom line is it's a bunch of paperwork.
