Actually, Helen, the reports of people abusing the welfare system were grossly inflated. I can't remember the exact figures, but there was a study conducted after the referendum which suggested that the number of non-national mothers of Irish-born children claiming welfare benefits was a tiny fraction of what had been spun in the pre-referendum campaigning. I think it was below 5%. And as I understand it, the decrease in the influx of immigrants (legal or illegal) has far more to do with skyrocketing cost of living in Ireland and the fact that immigrants are often paid exploitative wages.

...are those who've helped us.
Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.
....And in terms of us being a small country and unable to handle it.... come on - we have half the population we had 160 years ago. The UK is only 3 & a half times the size of Ireland, but it's got 15 times as many people. They're far more qualified to use the "small country" argument. And they don't
I just don't buy it. It's political spin, pandering to, & manipulating people's fears, instead of doing what responsible government should do, and inform citizens of the facts.

I'll take dumbed-down rhetoric for 300.
You're at least the third person in this short thread to pull out that highly original witticism...

Been hanging around too long on this train. After reading the lumping together and sterotyping of Muslims. I just thought I would take it to the Irish. Don't fret. At least I am not asscociating you with blowing up things. I think the drunk one is nicer.
Nope
new Article 9.2:
1° ...a person born in the island of Ireland... who does not have, at the time of the birth of that person, at least one parent who is an Irish citizen or entitled to be an Irish citizen is not entitled to Irish citizenship or nationality...

Oh, and screw Joe Carter!
can i personally show ravenna the door myself?
I was hoping to have the honor of doing that.
i dont mind sharing the honor...
Works for me.
You see this is the fucking problem with governmental policy. Most Irish people don't read the details of things they are voting on and just go with the tabloid media hype. Its a disgrace that a person born in this country is not a citizen but all the media did was hype up people stealing from us and taking advantage. Nobodys seems to want to talk about the fact the the majority of people who come into this country and are looking for citizenship are not allowed to seek full employment. (Helen this is not aimed at you by the way )
See this is why I stopped coming to the MT...my blood boils
