  • I agree -- any illegal who has a baby in Ireland should not be an instant Irish citizen.

They're OK because they are not from Central/South America.

  • we had a HUGE problem of people coming here, getting pregnant immediately, staying outside the radar til they HAD the kid in Ireland and then claiming Irish citizenship cos they have an Irish kid and going straight on welfare. We're only a small country and can't really handle that... the amount of illegals coming into the country has decreased dramatically since this law came in. I've no problem with anyone who needs asylum or refuge coming in here at ALL or those who are willing to work and join our society, it's those who find all the legal loopholes and come here JUST to abuse them that I DO have issues with.

What problems do you find with the Irish illegals in Boston?

Actually, Helen, the reports of people abusing the welfare system were grossly inflated. I can't remember the exact figures, but there was a study conducted after the referendum which suggested that the number of non-national mothers of Irish-born children claiming welfare benefits was a tiny fraction of what had been spun in the pre-referendum campaigning. I think it was below 5%. And as I understand it, the decrease in the influx of immigrants (legal or illegal) has far more to do with skyrocketing cost of living in Ireland and the fact that immigrants are often paid exploitative wages.

I have a better idea. Why don't we kick out all of the racists and segregationists who live in fear of people different from themselves living next door to them? We should welcome all with open arms.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

Every year on March 17th millions become instant Irishmen.

....And in terms of us being a small country and unable to handle it.... come on - we have half the population we had 160 years ago. The UK is only 3 & a half times the size of Ireland, but it's got 15 times as many people. They're far more qualified to use the "small country" argument. And they don't

I just don't buy it. It's political spin, pandering to, & manipulating people's fears, instead of doing what responsible government should do, and inform citizens of the facts.

ok you know more about the facts than I do but it's just my personal opinion. Like I said I have no problem with ANYONE coming to this country if they need to get out of their own country or if they simply want to come here and work. I do have issues though with those who come for neither reason and DO abuse the system, regardless of colour or nationality (even the lazy Irish bastards who take advantage). And I agree with the law, I don't think having a baby in a country should automatically make you a citizen.

I agree with all of that. But it's not anything like the crisis the government would have us believe.

Neither do I. But it should make the child a citizen, and that's the right that was removed by the constitutional amendment.

I thought the child is still a citizen? But since its parents aren't automatically, it would have to go with them? Unless they want to leave it with someone here who IS a citizen or in care or something.

You see this is the fucking problem with governmental policy. Most Irish people don't read the details of things they are voting on and just go with the tabloid media hype. Its a disgrace that a person born in this country is not a citizen but all the media did was hype up people stealing from us and taking advantage. Nobodys seems to want to talk about the fact the the majority of people who come into this country and are looking for citizenship are not allowed to seek full employment. (Helen this is not aimed at you by the way ;))

See this is why I stopped coming to the MT...my blood boils

No, that's ok... I fully blame the government and I think it's disgraceful that asylum seekers are not allowed to work as this makes people look down on them. I don't blame the media because I haven't seen much complaining to be honest. And I don't think people are as stupid as we think... a lot of opinions are shaped by personal experience, NOT the media.
