"HONG KONG — All pet dogs will be killed in a district of the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing as part of an anti-rabies campaign, the government said.

Residents of the city's Wanzhou district have until March 15 to hand over their dogs, according to a directive seen Wednesday on the district's official Web site.

"All the dogs in the area should be killed. A compulsory cull phase will begin after March 16. The forced cull will be carried out by the police," the directive said.

The statement said government guard dogs and those animals kept for research institutions, military and commercial purposes would be spared.

Officials have rounded up dogs in other cities, such as Beijing, as they crack down on strays and unregistered pets.

A spokesman at Wanzhou's Health Department refused to comment about the cull.

Hong Kong's South China Morning Post newspaper on Wednesday quoted a Wanzhou health official, Ran Hua, as saying the move would combat rabies in the area. He said three cases have been reported within the last year, and the paper said one person died last month."

Geez, isn't there a better way to handle this? I'm so glad I live in America!
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

hong kong? dogs? phooey. sounds like fast food.
  • That's heartbreaking. Some people bond with pets as closely as they do with their human relationships.

That sucks. Similarly in Ontario, pitbulls and other blacklisted dogs are now illegal to own and you had to get rid of them by a certain date. Too bad for many owners who had to give up their pets.

This has been going on for quite some time.........I remember first reading about it almost a year ago i believe. I love how there are three cases and one death in the past year, and now all dogs must be killed. Seems a little out of balance.

"those animals kept for research institutions, military and commercial purposes would be spared."
spared so they can undergo forms of torture/ be used for human purposes.

That's not quite right. It is just illegal to buy a new one and you have to outfit them with Hannibal Lecter gear if you want to take them for a walk. The funny thing is that my Staffordshire is 1000 times better behaved than all of those annoying yappy dogs that we meet on the walking path. But because shitty people owned them, they get blacklisted.

What seems stupid about that is that the pet dogs are probably less likely to have rabies than the strays. Why don't they just require everyone to immunize and present proof? But I'm probably applying logic in a place where it won't work.

The Canine movement doesn't impress me...seriously..what have they done for anyone in the last century...no jobs, no artistic ability, no education... I'm starting to doubt their desires they so often bark about.

Not really. This is the common treatment for an animal disease outbreak. For example, if an outbreak of bird flu were to occur, all of the birds in that region would be depopulated. The same thing goes with mad cow disease.

Huh? Do you have rabies? I don't get it.

    Yes it is.

They could try say....Vaccinations? Obviously a dog w/ rabies will have to be put down, but this is the most ridiculous overreaction ever.

If someone came to kill my dog my, they may end up dead themselves.
