Whats happend to us? Watching an episode of the wonder years the other day, when Kevin and the rest of his school walk out to protest the Vietnam war. We never see anything like this happening anymore. We are to tied up with our cell phones, mp3 players. We are oversexed national enquire loving losers. There is alot of well documented shit going on that had this been in the 60's the hippies would have been all over it. Who the fuck does this American Government think it is? And why isn't anybody doing anything about it? I myself feel the need to do something. This episode of wonder years really awakened me to the cause. And it really made me realize how complacent all generations since the flower power generation are. It's really rather disgusting. We are truly desenitized to violence and death and have kind of like accepted it as the norm WE ALL REALLY NEED TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE. Look whats happening in our world.

Here are some very interesting articles. The USA has no right to inflict its will on the world. Im not just talking about the Middle East and Iraq either. This is beyond fucking ridiculous. GET UP STAND UP. Just felt like going on a rant because today i am just totally disgusted in myself and the rest of our society. We have taken it all for granted.

I remember reading a book of Seattle in the 60s and along with the protests, and people willing to fight in marches, and campaigns there was a lot of violence. I heard it was a time of energy and potential, but that book really opened my eyes to the internal national violence.

I won't disagree with you about my own complaisance. I used to do a lot of volunteer work, and really I'm burned out. Doesn't mean I won't volunteer again, but maybe I'll use words as my strategy/shield/weapon instead.

A note about cell phones, though, there was a car crash near me, no one was hurt, and as I called 911 on my cell phone I saw at least 3 other people stop and call on their cell phones also.

During the 60's when I was born maybe there was less national fear. I don't know since I was born in 1968. I sense a current national fear, but I can't gauge the level compared to other decades. I would think the 1940s was a very fearful time which ultimately resulted in very conservative views of happiness in the 1950s. The 1960's was a violent reaction to these conservative views, and the 70s had disco so who knows what happened during that decade.

Many current battles/protests are conducted behind desks, and that doesn't mean less complaisance, but a different strategy and speed of communication.

I like the way you think Ms Haiku. It makes sense, I think I can agree with you both, I do think that violence is not the way to fight violence but I think that a lot has to do with fear as you mentioned, the fear of freedom of speech... now that is sad :(

Yes, as a poet, at least I think I am, it is one of the cruelest fears. To have that fear means I've stripped myself of my only recourse. My understanding is that many newspapers/avenues of communication are owned by few entities. I'm still absorbing the incredible ramifications of that.
