if it's not newsworthy, don't report it

i was watching a lot of news programs last night because of the alleged terror plot in the uk. anyways, i guess an air canada airliner had to make an emergency landing because of a "suspicious" package aboard the plane. all of the passengers(who were prolly shitting in their pants) had to get off the plane. it turns out that the suspicious package was just a box of dinner plates. it really irritates me because they're putting this on the news, right after the uk terror plot story. why would they bother reporting something that turns out to be absolutely nothing at all?? especially when they mix it in with real terror stories that are going on?? i think it's really irresponsible of the media. totally uncalled for.

In a word... ratings. If they get a viewer to keep watching to see what happens next rather than turning the channel, they've served their purpose.

I actually turned on the television last night for background noise and the news came on. They talked about the UK incident and flights to and from the U.S.A. being hindered. They talked about that for about 3 1/2 minutes.

Then they spent 20 minutes talking about how the OSPCA took this guys dogs away and dropped the charges against him but by then his dogs were already gone permanently. The guy plans to press charges against the OSPCA.

It's just kind of pathetic the proportionality in the news sometimes. Apparently stories about dead dogs catch more interest than stories about dead people.

    I agree OP.
I am tired of sensationalized facts.

PS: Lets go for more than a half page thread started by you this time!

I agree. The "better safe than sorry" approach now insists that we take every potential threat seriously, no matter how remote, and no matter if it actually doesn't end up being a threat. This is the attitude that says kids/teens shouldn't walk to school/go downtown/go for a hike, etc. without adults due to the (infinitesimally small) risk that they'll be abducted.

Most of the so-called news isn't about the news, it's commercialism, capitalism, consumerism and mind control.
