Love how ignorance, or just low intelligence causes people to stereotype an entire state over an incident.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

    Yeah, seriously.
I was born and raised in Louisiana -- New Orleans, to be exact.

When i was 5, the woman who ran my afterschool program was black. Everyone loved her.

The little black girl, Kadisha, in my kindergarten class was so fond of me, she'd bend down and fix my shoes if they came un tied.

I attended many a birthday party for class members where 1\3rd of the kids were black.

At Camelia Grill, every single server and line cook is black, and the mostly white guests are always chuckling and laughing with them. Last time i went there two years ago, the custom of the servers interacting had extended to the point that they usualy "gave dapples" (close fisted hand "shakes") to guests as they paid up and left.

My uncle is an assistant district attorney in New Orleans. Since Harry Connick Sr. (of relation, yes) retired, Eddie Jordan has been the new District Attorney. Guess what? He is black.

    Racism is a personal problem.
It is also a problem that can stem from poor education.
Lousiana just happens to be trailing the nation in education (when i was there it was 49th, it may be 48th now).

Don't be as bad a "them" by caving to stereotypes and painting with broad strokes of black and white.

    :(
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

Not to pile on inhiding, but this kind of stuff happens everywhere. There are ignorant racists in every state. Definitely here in Texas. Remember Jasper?

Lately it kind of seems like racial tensions are really building in this country with this incident, Michael Vick, Don Imus, and whatever else Al Sharpton decides is worth hollering about. I just hope it's just the media blowing it all out of proportion. Of course they are partly to blame.

Jasper, how can I forget?! That was so horrible...I'm still in disbelief!

it's like everywhere else ... major urban centres - it's not that relevant but as soon as you go to small town ... it definitely gets worse ...

racism is a problem only so much as ignorance is ... and there is a lot of ignorance ...
  • Maybe thats why they didn't play the south...

    But seriously, that's fucked up.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
  • I have to disagree. It is not like that in "urban cities". The use of nooses, confederate flags and burning crosses is definitely of prominence in the southern setting.

I have family who moved from here (up north) to NC. Very deep NC and they were in total social shock to find segregation still alive and well there. Albeit unwritten and unspoken. The whites don't talk to the blacks and vice versa. Specific areas of town, restaurants, stores etc. are "known" to be for specific "cultures". School was a very difficult adjustment to the kids. Their daughter saw a fellow classmate who was black at the mall one day and went up to say hi. The girl was quickly surrounded by other black kids and told she had no business talking to the black girl and that she better watch herself. She was scared.

    Such a shame.

  • My new neighbors moved here from Louisiana. They have a truck with a "Coons Ass" bumper sticker, and they called the cops on a black guy literally just walking by. So yes, they are a little fucked up.

I know that there are places in Ohio where that could happen. It's not just Louisiana. I despise racism in any form, but I don't want to paint an entire state as racist just because a handful of assholes live there.

    It is.
I mean...we would do stupid stoned drunk shit when I was that age, just to provoke people...nothing racist like that, but stuff. Like running naked around the block. Or, if we were in a hurry, biking naked around the block.

I grew up in a _very_ white city in Ontario, Canada. We still had a "black hotel" just outside the city lines until maybe 5-10 years ago, although I think it was abandoned much earlier.
