I saw this piece on PBS this morning and found it interesting. Leave it to the women to find ways to peace, love, and understanding.

Daughters of Abraham Book Club
September 29, 2006 Episode no. 1005 September 29, 2006

BOB ABERNETHY, anchor: While religious conflict is dominating the headlines, there are some who are trying to find understanding and respect across religious lines. A group of women in Cambridge, Massachusetts is doing just that. They have founded a book club to learn from each other's Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions. Betty Rollin has their story.

    Good for them.

Abraham is the Forefather of all three Religions.
If more people remembered this and set aside their anger and differences as these ladies have...

Ms. HOWE: One very strange thing that has happened to me is that I now think in a sort of 3-D paradigm. I cannot think about Christianity without thinking about Judaism and Islam. It is -- they are inextricably linked in my mind forever, I guess.

one would wonder how she failed to do this in the first place.

right now i am overwhelmed by this subject. i am new to religion and am trying very hard not to make any mistakes, such as becoming a hypocrite. i started thinking about interfaith and i "thought" of combining the religions that are at odds with each other in hope that our weaknesses make us stronger. i had no idea this was not an original idea! so now i am so grateful for this thread. it has opened a door for me and i am crying now because i can see god's grace at work. thank you!

It's no mystery, really. People who seek out knowledge about a religion other than their own are in the minority, I'm afraid. Personally, I've never been to a church that was interested in showing the similarities in these three religions. This book club is something these woman initiated on their own to enhance respect and understanding. The book club is a celebration of the cultural and religious differences. It is also a 'meeting of the minds' where these women learn they are not so different from each other after all. I found it to be a quite progresive step on a small scale.

You may be interested in the book, "Children of Abraham: A Story of God's People." I wrote it in an effort to bring better understanding among the Jews, Christians, and Muslims. (It took about 10 years to write it.) The book links together the histories of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I do not receive any royalty or revenue from this book, and the public can download it for free.

Leave it to women to hold themselves above men.

I've been saying this shit since the beginning of time.
I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

I hope that you enjoy the book and will tell your friends-and-relatives about it.

    I wish you well.

  • The book "Faith Club" is about the exact same topic. Good on these ladies for wanting to learn more.
No longer overwhelmed it seems so simple now.

    exactly.

and in most subjects that suffer from prejudice, most focus on the things that make on different rather than on the many similarities. whether we discuss religion, gender, race, culture, sexuality, etc.....far too often people focus on the divisive nature of difference rather than all that it is shared.

wow...just noticed this is a really old thread! good topic tho! :)
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow
