It's odd I was thinking of world hunger today along with many other things. I thought of how many here in this country are hungry and are going to be hungrier with our current dismal economic situation. As bad as it is in parts of the world taking care of America's current issues is drastically needed and after that's addressed this world's issue needs to be attended to.

Thank you Melodious for the post and I hope the President-Elect and other leaders will address this in the future. Oh I signed up

If there is one thing W can hang his hat on as he walks out of office, it's his work in Africa to fight hunger (and combat AIDS).

I know he did a lot of good, I believe with the World Food Programme (a group my company does a lot of aid for both monetarily and by offering consulting serivces).

As stated in another post (about what you'd do in response to Obama's call for service) ... I donate time and money to the San Francisco Food Bank ( http://www.sffoodbank.org/ ) which, doesn't just feed homeless, but provides tons of meals to underprivledged children in the area ensuring they get good breakfast, citing, kids who go to school not thinking about hunger do FAR better.

I encourage everyone to do just a little something either in their area, or with the above mentioned world programs.

    ugh,

who the hell in this country is going hungry, for christs sake?
so sanctimonious and self-righteous. And yeah, I DO KNOW cuz I been there, not one single person who asks to be fed in this country goes hungry.

As far as WORLD hunger goes, the only real solution to that is an end to the IMF. Make sure that countries aren't forced to borrow money at a higher interest rate than their GDP can support. Show me that petition and I'll sign.

None of us want to see people suffer, but let's not throw good money after bad. We send aid, bad guys come in and steal it from the people it's intended for. I'm sure the folks mean well, but any "success" with these things looks to me like a photo-op, harsh as that sounds.

Focus your attention on the real issues, folks.

I agree the IMF is making things worse...but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be addressing the issue of hunger around the world.

according to the UN in 2000, 11-13 million people died every year from hunger or starvation. that's unacceptable. if you can do something you should.

fo sho', I applaud the efforts of the people on the ground actually fighting the fight. And I genuinely feel for those who are suffering. Unless we tackle the root of the problem, it's only gonna get worse: more suffering, more poverty, greater control over these impoverished regions by people who don't give a crap.

... and how do they not go hungry? By work of thousands of volunteers, and plenty of donations ...

This is just San Francisco ... I'm sure the problem exists in many places around the country ...

A Look at Hunger in San Francisco: Neighborhood Profiles of Hunger and Food Pantries

In July of 2007, the San Francisco Food Bank compiled a report of hunger, poverty and food assistance profiles for every neighborhood of need in San Francisco. The San Francisco Food Bank based the analysis in A Look at Hunger in San Francisco: Neighborhood Profiles of Hunger and Food Pantries (pdf) on the 2000 U.S. Census and the Food Bank supported pantries as of July 2007.
According to the 2000 and 2005 U.S. Census, nearly 150,000 San Franciscans live at or near the poverty line, which means that nearly one in four children and one in five adults live with the daily threat of hunger. Hunger is a citywide phenomenon that afflicts people without regard for age, ethnicity, gender, family size and employment status. This report is unique because it provides detailed hunger statistics together with information on the food assistance available to families, seniors and the working poor in their neighborhoods.

That's pretty cool, I had a few meals at a soup kitchen in Costa Mesa, just for the hell of it, when I was makin' friends with hookers and crazy folks living in my crappy motel. Didn't see any ny kids, but that was many years and bong rips ago. Maybe I just mis-remember.

'zactly, its the folks on the ground. people like yourself who care, not the government.

And if you think a kid who asks for food from the folks is actually going to go hungry, you must live in some f-ed up shit over there. If some kid held his hand out to me, he'd be buried in freakin' canned goods and BigMacs, we all care about the kids.

I've been there sort of but take a look at parts of the city where I drive through everyday to work. That city: Our Nation's capital WASHINGTON DC.....Hunger In the DC METRO Area.

You can keep on believing what you want or face the fact that people in THIS country live everyday in hunger.

Are you refering the that bastion of liberalism that is DC? The same place that actually wants to ban handguns?

"the kids! the kids!" it's a bullshit attention getter, a guilt trip. Until you actually walk where these people walk I think you're drinking kool-aid. You don't know anything about the people you're talking about, you just drive on by looking out your window. I ain't buyin' it, and the notion disgusts me, frankly. You're the one believing what you want with no basis.

Listening and looking at all these numbers, I get the impression that I'm living in the Sudan. Where the hell have I been? Oh yeah, the projects of South Central, Watts, Olivehurst CA, New Orleans, Miami, Pahokee, Boca Raton (of all places).

    Let's solve the real problem.

Interesting you assume I just drive by seeing or just hearing this.

Well I beg to differ no pun intended. I attended a church in DC Third St Church of God and at that church they have a early breakfast program. They feed the poor and hungry every morning and I volunteer on Wednesdays when work doesn't impede me.

I've looked into these people's eyes, sat with them, ate with them, served them and talked to these people. In those eyes I see and feel how thankful they're to have this program since 1978. Many have been brought back on their feet to give their testimony in church and testiment to how that early breakfast program has saved their lives along with God's grace as they'll put it.

So I don't just pass by this city the Nation's Capital with my windows up and let the ones that are suffering wither away like dry leaves in the wind. I try and solve this not only with my hands but by what's in my pockets to help keep it going. This Thanksgiving will be one of the biggest dinners considering how many I'm seeing that are NOW going hungry.

That's the way I've seen and felt this city Washington DC over the years.

I'm glad that you care, we all do, none more than this troll. It's the folks who do the work. But your prose suggests to me that we're throwing a pity party, one which the "down and outers" are all too happy to attend. I'm sensing a whole lot of self-righteousness from some of the posters here, and that's not going to solve anything. Oppurtunity for those willing to take it is the solution.

I take my kids to church (though I'm not too crazy about organized religion), and I applaude the efforts of the church when it comes to charity. That's where charity belongs, not in the government.

Let's get real is all I'm sayin'. That's how we can solve the problem to the extent possible.

I gotta get up early to beat a deadline, night all good people, and goodnight to Jim-jed-jammyjam.

It's funny, I got two liberals here claiming that things are all f-ed up where they live, living in the two most liberal parts of this country, and they sit
around pissing and moaning about conservatives and how W ruined their lives. craziness.

    now, goodnight, really.

It's interesting that where that church is located you can see the Capital Dome which is about a mile away. I see that Dome and I often wonder why is that we can waste so much money in this country on various thngs, we have so much but yet we give so little some of us. I often wonder why this government can't do better for those who can't or is it this problem of hunger left up to the citizens like you and me to solve?

AHHH shit this is getting all to heavy for me now I gather that's why I sometimes start threads like going back in the past & give a response about Obama? :) Just so that I can get away from heavy subject and feelings such as hunger. Well at least we're talking about it.

It's called human compassion ... maybe if you weren't so damn caustic all the time, you'd crawl out from behind that cold heart of yours and do some good for your fellow man. Or at the very least, not cut down others that are trying to do some good for those not as fortunate. What kind of jack ass cuts down people who are trying to help the less fortunate?
