I've listened to this a few times, but this was the first time i noticed it. When Eddie sings "in the garden", he changed to lyrics to "in this soundgarden". Just thought it was a cool reference, maybe others didnt pick up on it like me.

    So did I...Loved it..
    Conversations getting dull
There's a constant ringing in my ears
Sense of humor's void and numb
    And I'm bored to tears.......
  • he also turned to matt and kind of pointed at him too :)

  • I always thought that Riot Act was a name-check of sorts to 10. The garden line...the "there ain't gonna be any middle anymore, it's been said before" line in 1/2 Full. There are others in my hypothesis but I can't think of any off-hand.

    maybe he's hinting at something...?
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.
  • The lyric "There's an upside of down" is possibly a reference to Down on the Upside.

It's funny, because I always thought that cropduster would have been a perfect song for down on the upside, the song kinda has the same feeling that is on this album, to me.. and the tempo is ala soundgarden, too..
about riot act, there are more than one lyrics similarities in the songs.. half full-porch is one, then there's bushleaguer-corduroy (everything has changed-everything has chains, or changed), you are-undone (this broken wheel is coming undone-the world has come undone), thumbing my way-man of the hour (all the rusted signs we ignore..-the rusted signs left just for me).. even musically, the beginning of the third solo of ghost is just the beginning of the solo of state of love and trust (one step higher)...
    Anyway, I fuckin' love cropduster

Probably one of the best songs on that album, and I think it is different from any song the band has done. The different time signature, the changes in the chords. It's a very unique song for Pearl Jam.

Also, going on what another poster said, it's ironic that the lyrics are similar to You Are and Undone, especially considering that "You Are" was actually supposed to be entitled "Undone".

Cropduster is fuckin great. I believe Matt wrote the song.
Light green to green, dark green, brown..
    Every life is falling down
Brown to black, it's coming back
Dies to be part of the ground
Seed to seedling, root to stem

    Yeah, it's Ed's lyrics and Matt's music.

  • that song is amazing. do you know how much i freaked when i heard the first few notes on that day? i remember my body was trembling a lot even though i didnt know what song it was at first, only that it was familiar. it was like my body knew what song it was before my brain did. but when i realized it was cropduster, i completely flipped out! i almost started crying and i was jumping up and down, i called my friend (who decided she didnt want to come because she didnt want to sit behind the stage..) and yelled to her on the phone.. it was such an amazing part of my life! it's one of my absolute favorite songs and i never thought i'd hear it in a million years unless i invented a time machine and went back to 2003 when they played it non-stop.

One of their best ever in my opinion. Ghost is a kick ass follow up too.
