Please pass the butter, please..

Hey Ms. Haiku:

Here's some supporting evidence for your link that was posed...called nutritional value???

I also think this is an excellent point to exert concerns that we share...

Here's something that a friend sent to me...:

Pass the butter ~ ~ ~ ~ This is interesting.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed he turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it?They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter? Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.*Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.*Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods..*Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!* Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.* Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..

*Very high in trans fatty acids.

*Triple risk of coronary heart disease.Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol).

* Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold. Lowers quality of breast milk.

*Decreases immune response.

* Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

*** Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..***

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic.

Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to "butter them up")!

    Becel

Becel is a brand of margarine, produced by Unilever and sold in many territories world wide. It is sold in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Poland and Australia under the name Flora.

The name Becel originates from the three letter acronym BCL (Blood Cholesterol Lowering). When introduced, the blood cholesterol lowering effect was achieved by modifying the triacylglycerol (TAG) profile of the fat used in the margarine: an increased level of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) reduces the blood cholesterol level (see e.g. A. Keys et al, Serum cholesterol response to changes in the diet. IV. Particular saturated fatty acids in the diet, Metabolism 14, 776-787 (1965)).

More recently, products were introduced under the "pro-activ" sub-brand. These products are based on the effects of plant sterols and sterol esters on blood cholesterol lowering (see e.g. M.B. Katan et al, Efficacy and Safety of Plant Stanols and Sterols in the Management of Blood Cholesterol Levels, Mayo Clinic Proceedings 78, 965-978 (2003)). In recent years the Becel/Flora brand has been extended to products other than margarine. Cooking oil, pot yoghurts and yoghurt drinks are some of the non-margarine products launched by Unilever under the Becel/Flora brand, all of which are designed to help lower blood cholesterol level.

In the United States, Becel is sold under the name "Promise" by Unilever USA.

Ok well I'm no fan of margarine and I avoid it like the plague. I remember reading about how it was made years ago and grossed me out. Not to mention that I don't like the taste of it, so I'd rather have nothing than have margarine. But I also have a problem with butter, well the spreadable kind that you keep in the fridge anyway, because most of it available here blends in Canola Oil to "soften" it to make it more spreadable. And seeing as how I cannot seemingly find any manufacturer who wants to certify that their Canola Oil does not contain GMO then I avoid Canola Oil like the the plague too!

So for butter, I stick to Mainland Butter Soft. It's not Australian and that does give me some pause, but I rationalize that by feeling good that it's Kiwi and if I have to support an overseas brand then Kiwi would be my choice.

The only kind of margarine I would eat is an Australian brand and made from sunflowers and contains no artificial colors or flavors. Most doctors recommend it.

But there's so many things you can use instead of either.

I use tzatziki for spread alot. It's great instead of butter in some sandwiches and terrific on jacket potatoes.
Avocado is good instead of butter or marg too.
As is low fat cream cheese.
There's always chutneys and relishes for sandwiches too.
And vegies taste great with a squeeze of lemon or with a little olive oil drizzled over them and sprinkled with fresh herbs.
    NOPE!!!

I like my tzatziki with so much garlic that it's a bit spicy. I would kill for some nice spicy west or east Indian food as well right now.

Must be subliminal messages going on here Roland coz Jamie ^ and I were just talking about Indian food! :D

Love spicy food! And I was just saying that I haven't been for Indian for ages! I've just discovered my favorite little Nepalese place has closed :( and all this talk of Indian food has got me thinking it's been a while, so I'll have to hunt some out. I made some Aloo Gobi a little while ago from scratch, I was pretty pleased with my efforts! Got the recipe from the Bend It Like Beckham dvd! :)

Yeah, tatziki is THE BOMB!!! I love that stuff! I'd live off it if I could! :)

    Margerine is crap.

I haven't touched that garbage since I was a kid and my parents stopped buying it way back in the 70s, because they knew it was crap.....even back then.

I can't eat butter because I'm lactose intolerant.

I was basically raised on Olive Oil, anyway. So Olive Oil is what I use for most cooking and even on toasted bread. Canola oil for popcorn.

    This is kind of ironic....
Yesterday, I over heard by mom telling my sister that margarine is horrible and one molecule away from being plastic. She (my mom) has always used butter and hates margarine. I'm glad I have a mom who searches into things.
Oh yeah...canola oil is bad for you, too. Peanut oil is the best thing to use for frying things such as french fries and deep fried chicken :)
