I can't believe I am the first to mention this.

I'd like to say there was a last minute show of backbone by the dems

but it seems like there was a big showing by the republicans

it almost seems like too much to hope for.

  • So the dems had the votes and a chance to bring this resolution to the house floor, and they backed down and instead sent it to committee? That's about par for the course for this Congress....

    Debate on Cheney impeachment averted
The Kucinich resolution accuses Cheney of leading country to war
    The Associated Press
    updated 5:24 p.m. ET, Tues., Nov. 6, 2007

WASHINGTON - House Democrats on Tuesday narrowly managed to avert a bruising debate on a proposal to impeach Dick Cheney after Republicans, in a surprise maneuver, voted in favor of taking up the measure.

Republicans, changing course midway through a vote, tried to force Democrats into a debate on the resolution sponsored by longshot presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.

The anti-war Ohio Democrat, in his resolution, accused Cheney of purposely leading the country into war against Iraq and manipulating intelligence about Iraq's ties with al-Qaida.

The GOP tactics reversed what had been expected to be an overwhelming vote to table, or kill, the resolution.

Midway through the vote, with instructions from the GOP leadership, Republicans one by one changed their votes from yes — to kill the resolution —to no, trying to force the chamber into a debate and an up-or-down vote on the proposal.

At one point there were 290 votes to table. After the turnaround, the final vote was 251-162 against tabling, with 165 Republicans voting against it.

"We're going to help them out, to explain themselves," said Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas. "We're going to give them their day in court."

Democrats countered by offering a motion to refer the proposal to the House Judiciary Committee for further study, effectively preventing a debate on the House floor. That motion passed by a largely party-line vote of 218-194.

The White House, in a statement, said Democrats were shirking responsibilities on issues such as childrens' health insurance "and yet they find time to waste an afternoon on an impeachment vote against the vice president. ... This is why Americans shake their head in wonder about the priorities of this Congress."

Kucinich has long pushed for a vote to impeach Cheney, but has failed to win the backing of the Democratic leadership. After Kucinich introduced the resolution, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., immediately moved to table it.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said "impeachment is off the table" and Congress is focused on responsibly getting U.S. troops out of Iraq, covering 10 million uninsured children and meeting national priorities long neglected by the Bush administration, said her spokesman Nadeam Elshami.

The resolution said that Cheney, "in violation of his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of vice president," had "purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify the use of the U.S. Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security interests."

The 11-page resolution also charged that Cheney purposely deceived the nation about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al-Qaida and has "openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran absent any real threat to the United States."

House approval of an article of impeachment sends the issue to the Senate, which has the constitutional authority to try and, with a two-thirds vote, remove a person from office.

I thought when people voted the dems into power, they were going to do SOMETHING. They have done nothing productive to this point and just continue to waste our tax money.

Unfortunately the Democrats have been backing off on the highest profile issues. But the Democrats do not have a super majority. This has hampered much legislation and much of the bravado they showed during the elections of 2006.

When the Republican Party falls in 2008 the Democrats will need to put in a better effort to show they are better leaders. If they fail, it will be time to do away with both parties.

They won't fail once they get in power again. And the investigations will be massive.

Whether it's Hillary, who has a hard-on for the Republican establishment to begin with, or Obama or Edwards or whomever, the investigations into the damage that Rove, Cheney, Bush et. al have wreaked will keep the Republicans stymied for the next 4 to 8 years.

If Hillary wins, you can bet that nothing will be done while her focus remains on chasing after the Repubs that burned and scorned her all these years. If Edwards or Obama or whomever else wins instead, you can count on actual investigations with results.

    Hard to argue with that.

There still an outside chance Gore will enter the race. He has three mounts left to decide.
Some polls have shown that he is only a few points behind Senator Hillary even when the poll question includes the fact he is not a candidate.

it's really too late for Al to jump into the game. The first primaries are only 2 months away. He's already said he doesn't want to run. If he were to pull off the miracle you all want, he needs a lot more than your fervent hopes and prayers.

    Just my 2 cents.

no it did not fail. it is going to be pursued and investigated in the house judiciary committee then if it passes a vote there it will go to the entire house for debate. its like the senate judiciary committee debating the Mukasey nomination, which it approved, and he will be voted on by the full senate.

there is a chance that this thing might work, because i think once it passes a committee vote all it takes is a simple majority in the house to impeach the VP. don't quote me on any of this, its been years since i took a gov't class.

here is the page listing the members of the house judiciary committee if you want to contact your Representative and tell them which way you feel they should vote.

also, here is a statment from John Conyers (Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee) on the Kucinich resolution, so they really are going to look into the matter.

Might as well ask my dog to register to run for office. Be just a effective as writing my congress man. May be more so since my dog will at least talk back to me.

the lack of time might help him. he's already got huge name recognition. and people are already sick of hillary and obama. i don't see a late start as bad for al gore really.

....it all comes down to the war chest. What does he have in his war chest? How much for the primary, how much for the general? Most Republicans look at Gore and laugh. Even now. What does Iowa think of him? What does New Hampshire? Too late.

Thompson tried to join his GOP race late, look at him.

    I'm just being realistic, here.

  • Thomson was a joke before he even started. His main problem is that most of the voting public is able to go out and rent a movie he was in. Thus the end of the road for Thomson

Based on the interview I read in Rolling Stone it doesn't seem like Gore has a interest in running for president. But I think he could decide in July to run and he'd have a good shot at winning the nod for Democratic candidate and prez. And who cares if the Republicans think he's a joke. Democrats think ALL Republican candidates are a joke. Except for maybe Ron Paul, but he has as much as of a chance to win as Dennis Kucinich. Great fringe candidates but too far from the mainstream to get the mouth breathing masses to vote for them.

when our politics has nothign to do with money... we will see real change

until then we are all becoming indocrinated to believe this is the way, openly debating and discussing war chests and who has raised how much. we have become a joke within itself...
