I think the idea of living a better cleaner life is a great thing but it should never be imposed upon society by the government.

I totally agree with you. As a former Vzla. inhabitant I can assert that Venezuelans drink wayyy too much, there's always an excuse to drink a beer, a scotch or whatever it is your drink of choice. And those who don't like to drink usually have a hard time, 'cause people won't take no for an answer.
For instance, my sis got married last year in Caracas and in average each guest drank 1/2 a bottle of scotch (100 guests and 50 bottles) plus the champaign, the wine, the vodka and the rhum.

Chavez has raised a valid public health concern. What bothers me is that he puts it in the context of his anti-imperialism struggle. Drinking and smoking less is a health issue not a new way to oppose the US, especially since Scotch is imported from the UK ;).

And also remains to be seen if this policies will include his friends/followers and allies, 'cause this is not usually the case

I'm no fan of chavez but he seems to be making valid points. whiskey is dangerous stuff and people should be encouraged to drink less.
