Ick. Bob Barr is not a Libertarian. He's a warmed-over Republican.

    Some of Barr's "Libertarian" views:

Barr was a strong supporter of the War on Drugs, reflecting his previous experience as Anti-Drug Coordinator for the Department of Justice.[16] While in Congress, he was a member of the Speaker's Task Force for a Drug-Free America.[15][16] This task force was established in 1998 by then Speaker Newt Gingrich to "design a World War II-style victory plan to save America's children from illegal drugs."[17] The task force crafted legislation specifically designed to "win the War on Drugs by 2002". [How'd that work out, Bob?]

Barr advocated complete federal prohibition of medical marijuana. In 1998, He successfully blocked implementation Initiative 59 -- the "Legalization of Marijuana for Medical Treatment Initiative of 1998" -- which would have legalized medical marijuana in the District of Columbia.[19]

Barr took a lead in legislative debate concerning same-sex marriage. He authored and sponsored the Defense of Marriage Act, a law enacted in 1996 which states that only marriages that are between a man and a woman can be federally recognized, and individual states may choose not to recognize a same-sex marriage performed in another state.[26] However, he does not support the Federal Marriage Amendment, citing states' rights reasons.[27]

He voted for the Patriot Act

In Congress, he also controversially proposed that the Pentagon ban the practice of Wicca in the military.

Yeah...I'm a little familiar with him from living and voting in Ga. He certainly does not seem to be a Libertarian. He's Republican thru & thru.

The word Opportunist, is all I can really conjure when I think of Bob Barr.

He's a career politician, and at this point he's clamoring for attention trying to find a market in the economic conservatives that don't pay attention I guess.

I don't think he has a strong view on anything I think he just sticks his finger in the political wind and hopes for the best.

My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • didnt this already happen once with the Libertarians with Buchanan? Its like the place for republicans rejects to seek shelter.

I normally vote Libertarian, but Barr isn't really a Libertarian. I hope the party doesn't select him as the nominee. If he gets the nod, I'll write myself in, I guess.

he's going to have to wrestle Mike Gravel to win the nomination.

how the fuck does the Libertarian nomination process work anyway? all i know is their convention is in a few weeks.

The convention is in Denver in a few weeks. Delegates select the nominee. Delegates are allocated based on a formula, and are selected at state conventions which have already taken place. Here's the formula used for allocating delegates: http://www.thegreenpapers.com/T08/Li-Alloc.phtml

It will be interesting to see if Barr or Gravel can gain traction in such a short amount of time. They both have positives in terms of name recognition, but negatives in terms of being seen as opportunists. I'm sure there will be questions about both of them and their ability to embrace the platform.

Only a taste of his platform, but right in line with the Libertarians thus far. It will certainly be interesting to see whether he defends or attempts to explain away his past positions...
