The mods don't have any problem with talking politics. You can insult political figures until your fingers fall off. In the interest of civility, you are not supposed to insult fellow board members. You can tear their opinions all to pieces if you care to (and are able), but you can't insult them personally. Those who frequently resort to insults and name-calling do so because they don't have anything else. They're incapable of arguing their point, so they stoop to childish tactics. If you're one of those, no one will miss you when you're gone.

Then go to 'The Porch', 'Given to Fly' or 'Other Music'. Only band/music related threads there. The MT is for discussing politics, current events... (as it says!). You don't need to be on this thread if you don't want to.

i'm gonna have to disagree with you there. a couple of weeks ago a thread that i started was locked because i called Louise Arbour a cunt (which she is, among others).
i'm sure a thread calling George W. Bush a cunt would be a lot less problematic for the quite-fallible mods.

i dont disagree with you. in fact a jewish scholar friend of mine told me pretty much the same thing.

other factors are -

racial mixing - giving jews a gene pool like no other
lack of choice - they were forced to master difficult trades like medicine and finance
darwining selection - since the jews always had big problems in life, only the best and smartest of them survived
faith - their faith in the biblical promise that the maker is always with them, gives them courage to attempt anything, survive anything.

jews are indeed the most remarkable people on the planet.

Personally, I don't think genetics has really anything to do with intelligence. I think it's cultural. Of course, there is virtually no way to test for genetic intelligence besides monozygous twin studies and I haven't come across any such studies.

I work with a guy that is going on 3 degrees in completely different fields, two of which he has no desire for. He says he does it to live up to his family name, because everyone in his family has at least 5 degrees.

I think that's the main reason for the average intellect of Jewish people.

oh yes i forgot... genetics.

jews, esp ashkenazi, are the amongst the most intelligent genetically as well.
their average i.q's are well above that of europeans or south-east asians.

jews have shown a propensity to beget very gifted people right through their history. i mean they are basically a smart people, the way the vietnamese are a short people or the sumo wrestlers are a fat people. on top of that they have a huge gene pool.

IQ is determined by asking knowledge based question.
E.g. What is the pythagoras theorum? It's required for every IQ test I've taken, except the ones modeled after Mensa's test. Most of the questions on IQ tests are algebra.

The brain changes over time. If you don't use it, you lose it. I'm becoming ambidextrous by using my left hand half the time. I would say right now, I can do most things just as well with my left hand as my right. Where as a few years ago I could not. The brain is constantly changing, it can grow, or it can shrink.

I know many people have tried to find an intelligence gene and some believe there is one. And I don't deny that genetics may play a small role in intelligence. But it's nearly impossible to know that for sure. If you ask a newborn to find the area of a triangle, it's going to puke on you or something.
