In a 1998 essay in the New Yorker, author Toni Morrison described Clinton as "our first black president. Blacker than any actual person who could ever be elected in our children's lifetime." She went on to say:

" Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald's-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas. "

whats your take ??
I have faced it, A life wasted...

Take my hand, my child of love
Come step inside my tears
Swim the magic ocean,
I've been crying all these years

Very interesting. Can you provide the link to the entire essay? An interesting thing about Clinton to me was his welfare reform because it is so specifically against the core ideals of his party. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-07-17-welfare-reform-cover_x.htm

Something to remember about Clinton was that he was a moderate. I would also say that 'single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald's-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas' describes an awful lot of white folks too.

I think it's unfortunate that, aside from the saxophone playing, the comparison to black people had to be made with the use of negative characteristics as opposed to the many positives.

aside from the saxophone playing, Clinton was not black.

I'm not sure what to make of the specific quote. One thing I'm sure of though is presidents get too much credit when things are going well and too much blame when things are going poorly.

my take is that authors like this are THE racists...and are obsessed with it...THEY view things through black and white...

    (sung by Al Sharpton)

Barack the Magic Negro lives in D.C.
The L.A. Times they called him that
cause he's not authentic like me

Yeah the guy from the L.A. paper
said he made guilty whites feel good
they'll vote for him and not for me
cause hes not from da hood

see real black men like snoop dogg
    or me or farrakhan
have talked the talk and walked the walk
not come and laid and won (not sure about this line)

Barack the Magic Negro lives in D.C.
The L.A. Times they called him that
cause he's not authentic like me
cause hes black but not authentically

Barack the Magic Negro lives in D.C.
The L.A. Times they called him that
cause he's not authentic like me
cause hes black but not authentically

    some say barack's articulate
and bright and new and clean
the media sure love this guy
    a white interloper's dream

but when you vote for president
watch out and dont be fooled
dont vote the magic negro in
    cause...

Brilliant lyrics, and typical to this thread, those on the left are THE racists.
And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

You claim Al Sharpton (who is an asshat for many reasons, but that's beside the issue at hand) wrote/sang the above song...

Sorry, it's a rush limbaugh parody exposing the racism of liberals...it's based on 4 articles by liberal journalists that criticize obama b/c he's not "black enough" whatever that means....and it criticizes the outrageous term "magic negro" invented by liberals...

    Rush uses Sharpton's voice b/c he's known for race-baiting....

my point is to point out the ass-clownery of this thread...one of the dopeyiest topics i've ever seen.

that writer is not the first who ever called him "the first black president". he was called that almost from the time he was first elected. why? I don't know. I would call most of those characteristics more of "being southern", than "being black".

and I think he and Hillary are linked by name only. I am certain that Hillary is a socialist. and like somebody else said, Bill was fairly moderate. it's almost like they're not from the same party, much less the same family.

I was at a Toni Morrison lecture.. and someone asked her about this topic. She said she was not the first person to say this about President Clinton, but she lifted it from Chris Rock. She thought Rock's perspective was interesting so she elaborated on it.
