The Bible is Literature. I don't think anybody can disagree with that.

  • The Bible is perhaps the most historically important blueprint for storytelling we have today in any culture. Every good modern narrative takes its cues from the Bible.

I dunno about 'most historically important blueprint'. It is literature, journalism. It borrows heavily on the literature/storytelling before it.

I said 'perhaps the most...' Agreed, there were landmarks before it, but I was referring to modern literature. And it isn't all 'journalism', no.

Not really. You could Google 'pre-christian literature'. I haven't googled it myself, but I bet you could find what I'm talking about.

I googled it, and no literature came up which definitely predates the entire Bible.

It might be helpful to distinguish between 'pre-Christian' and 'pre-Organised Christian'. Plenty of literature is available from before the Bible was canonised and the Jewish sect or movement became an official 'religion'. But taking all the Bible's material as a whole (Torah included), you'd be hard pressed to find anything written before it which has had anything like its impact on literature.

That impact was of course also a result of the bible for a long time pretty much being the only book that was around, and the book referred to with authority to decide various matters by the powerful catholic church. Not because of it's literary qualities first and foremost.

But it is literature, and good literature too at times. Although not entirely my cup of tea.

You may be right. My instincts are telling me you're off on this one. Paper with words on it was at a premium 2000 years ago. As it is now.
