Why doesnt the government simply take control of the oil companies. Ya know, like they did in Russia and Venezuela?
Fuck it. Just take em.
I am only half kidding. It really would be no sweat off my balls. I know the feds dont like to get involved and prefer to let the market take care of itself, but maybe its time to get involved.
Also, if these guys in DC dont do something about this soon, they should be prepared for some pretty heavy demonstrations in the streets of America. People simply cannot afford this shit, and there is no end in sight to the rising costs. I thought $4 dollar a gallon was scare tactics....now I am hearing possibly 7-8 by next summer......
one more thing....I bought 100 gallons of heating oil...over 400 bucks. WTF man? Thank God its warm. Shit will really hit the fan this winter.

All that's sacred, comes from youth....dedications, naive and true.

I saw this today. It's an interactive map of gas prices across the country. Pretty cool (the map, not the gas prices):
http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx
The capital is there, why the hell are we not drilling in florida and California and not getting into the western oil shale and coal gassification, not to mentiong building better cleaner NEW REFINERIES with larger capacity all the while finding newer easier ways to collect and use natural gas, wind, solar and nuclear power among other things.
Big issues with this are various aspects of the government and industry and various political action groups are at odds with each other.
We are focusing too much on the problem and not the solution.
This issues has gotten completely out of hand. Chill out people. Yes, oil and gas is expensive. It is expensive because you've created an environment where supply has not been able to keep up with demand. Want lower prices? Then get out of the way of the supply. If you're not willing to do that, however, then stop bitching.
Nationalizing oil companies will not create more supply or limit demand. Setting prices will not create more supply and will increase demand. Eliminating gas taxes will not create more supply and will increase demand. Drilling for oil, however, will increase supply.
That would be brilliant:

But drilling for oil will not decrease demand. Nothing will decrease demand. And I honestly believe that demand will raise much faster than supply (look at the 1000$ car in india), whatever protected areas they drill in.
which is why most of the major oil companies have shifted some of thier research capital to alternative energy besides oil and dubbed themselves Energy companies rather than Oil companies. I have a problem with Exxon buying up battery patents and sitting on them and that's where we have a need for the government to act as well as finding solutions to reduce the demand on oil. We've got to ensure the competitive balence is infact working, that supplies are not unnecessarily being reduced due to lack of foresight (I believe this happened in the 1990's) and that alternate methods are adequately explored, researched and marketed and that the proper funding is allocated to each whether it is public or private (coming in the form of tax based incentives) etc.
Supply can be raised quite a bit, it just hasn't been a focus in around 30 years.
natural gas is literally ridiculously easy to get and or find, much easier than oil, much more cost effective, and it's virtually untapped in regards to our basic transit.
Better technology will decrease demand. In terms of supply, we're talking about oil. In terms of demand, however, we're talking about energy.
World demand for oil will certainly continue increasing for a very long time. American demand for oil, however, need not follow.
