If a company charges x amount for 1 person, the ruling seems to make sense.
I think they're charging per seat, not per person. It if were per person, couldn't I just say I was really tired and request 3 seats so I could lay down?

Isn't it better to have the overweight person sitting in the other two seats next to you rather than crammed in between you and someone else? I think so.

But if they need two seats they shouldn't they pay for two seats, just like if you need to bring twice as much luggage you should have to pay for twice as much luggage. Speaking of which, I wonder if obese people are going to start getting to bring twice as much luggage for the same price, since logically their clothes are bigger?

Luggage is not the same as a person's weight, in my opinion.
I don't care what the other guy pays for his seat(s). As long as i don't have to pay more for mine, it doesn't make any difference to me.
I just don't get this mindset of just because they get it, i want it too.

Why is luggage not the same? If a person is big enough where he or she needs two seats, then that person's clothes are probably around twice as big as mine. Logically, if he or she were to go away for a week (and pack for the same amount of clothing changes as I would) their luggage would be twice as big and twice as heavy as mine. So should they be allowed to bring twice as much luggage as me just because they are obese?
Plus you will have to pay more. More to cover the fact that they are no giving out seats that they are not allowed to charge for, and more to cover the legal fees for this stupid lawsuit.
I sat next to a really fat guy who spilled over into my seat on a 3 hour flight. My leg was numb by the end because i couldn't move it because he was pushing up on it so much. I wanted to ask for my money back because I paid for a full seat but only got 2/3 of one. Totally unfair in my book. I thought about calling over the flight attendant and asking to move but the guy seemed nice and didn't want to make him feel bad in front of everybody.
A possible answer to this problem is having bigger seats. I don't agree that an obese person should be able to get a second seat for free, but to be honest those seats are freaking tiny. I'm about average build and I find those seats a tight squeeze.
As for the luggage comparison the only reason airlines charge for extra luggage is because they make most of their money on freight. By reducing the amount of luggage they have to carry they can increase the amount of freight they can carry per flight.

Finally someone with some sense making the argument.
I've been flying for 40 years, my dad's a pilot. At one time there were only two seats on each side of the aisle until the mid 80's when they started cramming people in.

It is absolutely ridiculous the way they cram passengers into a plane. You have to be a complete waif, and no taller than 4'10", in order to be able to sit comfortably in those seats. This past summer I flew to the Dominican Republic, a 4 hour flight, and I was ready to burst by the time the plane landed. As I said even a person of average size, like myself, was terribly uncomfortable in those seats so I can't image what a larger person must feel like.

Yeah, any coach flight over an hour and a half becomes a war of comfort attrition. The fuckin armrests are barely 2 inches across and if the person in front of you reclines you can't even situate your laptop.

Not if he has the window and aisle and you have the middle.

There's probably truth to that, as the smart Canadians are more apt to leave (escape) and come to America.
