A lot of democrats voted against it for the same reason that a lot of republicans did - the bill sucked.
But, the reason that the republicans are getting more of the blame, is because the democratic leadership brought the yes's that they were promising, but the republicans came up very short from what they said they could bring. More of poor leadership knowing the vote count than representatives actually voting against it.

and why are the republicans getting most of the blame?
Thier constituants called them to tell them they were against it and they or thier staff members took a look at it and decided it wasn't a good bill to pass.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
it is an election year for the house and I think you will find that most of those representatives in close races or in a race at all were able to vote 'no' so that they did not have to face the backlash at home when the candidate that they are running against throws it in their face. Pretty standard strategedy considering the opponent did not have to vote. This bailout is not very popular with the average citizen.
So, basically the democrats scrounged up the 140 votes with an understanding that the republicans would make up the difference so it would pass, only when it came time to vote, many republicans 'ayes' backed out. Then the finger pointing and so on. I think it is typical for a vote to only happen when they know it will pass or that they have the votes.
A lot of people will ask why the democrats did not just vote to pass since they have the majority. The answer is they do not want the responsibility of owning this bailout. It could carry some heavy repercussion in future elections if it were to fail.
Example: Chris Carney, Pennsylvania 10th district Democrat voted against it while Paul Kanjorski, Pennsylvania 11th district Democrat voted in favor of the bailout. Carney, first term incumbent who took a seat from a very conservative and popular representative (Don Sherwood) last election is in a tight race with Chris Hackett and was able to avoid being labeled and possibly losing his seat. Kanjorski has been in office for 20+ years and can take the hit.
Why are the Dems so interested in helping the rich all of a sudden on Wall Street?
Furthermore, will the Republicans be able to talk for years about how the Dems bailed out the rich people?
democrats & republicans are two sides of the SAME coin!! they are controlled by the same people!! there is no TRUE opposition!! it's WWF fucking theater!!Stop swallowing the bullshit and wake up!!
what really happened with the vote is some of these people finally found their spine/conscious and knew signing this fascist bill would destroy what little there is left of our country.
There was a statistic floated yesterday that stated that the majority of Representatives that voted down the bill where involved in closely contested re-election campaigns. It makes one wonder what their vote would have been if that where not the case. Did they vote against the bill because they honestly felt it was wrong or simply because they didn't want to loose their re-election bid.

I'd like to think the Representatives in the House voted no based on the feedback from their constituency. Funny how we've not seen any polling data on how many Americans opposed this "bailout" (now convently called a rescue package). The House Website was shut down yesterday due the volume of traffic. I tried to email my representative, but was unable to. I'll be calling today.

The last poll I heard of was that only 13% of people polled where in support of the bail out/rescue plan. I can't remember exactly but something like 43% where opposed and the remainder did not know enough of the details to declare themselves.

I just did a search and found this. It seems the numbers I heard where a bit off.

Nope... it's election year, simple as that!
They're not gonna do anything to jeopardise votes... but if Obama wins, he'll probably bring something similar in a couple of weeks later. They're way too predictable.

I did that as well but my Representative voted for it and from what I have heard both of my Senators are voting for it as well.
