GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Democrat John Edwards is endorsing former rival Barack Obama, fresh signs of the party establishment embracing the likely nominee even as Hillary Rodham Clinton refuses to give up her long-shot candidacy.
Edwards was to appear with Obama in Grand Rapids, Mich., as Obama campaigns in a critical general election battleground state.
The endorsement comes the day after Clinton defeated Obama by more than 2-to-1 in West Virginia. The loss highlighted Obama's work to win over the "Hillary Democrats" — white, working-class voters who also supported Edwards in large numbers before he exited the race.
Edwards, a former North Carolina senator and the 2004 vice presidential nominee, dropped out of the race in late January.
Both Obama and Clinton immediately asked Edwards for his endorsement, but he stayed mum for more than four months. A person close to Edwards, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he wanted to get involved now to begin unifying the party. Obama also signed on to Edwards' poverty initiative, which was a major cause for Edwards in his campaign and since he left.
When he made his decision, Edwards didn't even tell many of his former top advisers because he wanted to make sure that he personally talked to Clinton to give her the news, said the person close to him. Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, who has spoken favorably about Clinton's health care plan, did not travel with him to Michigan and is not part of the endorsement.

if Obama does get to become President I can see Edwards getting a Cabinet position of sorts.Thats a lovely accent you have. New Jersey?

I don't think Obama would pick him as VP because I don't think it would help. Obama isn't going to when in the South with or without Edwards on the ticket. Obama would be much better served picking the Governor of Ohio or someone.
Attorney General however, would make sense. All the rusted signs, we ignore throughout our lives, choosing the shiny ones instead...
And he who forgets, will be destined to remember...0 -

i wouldn't say the whole south just yet. i think he could have a chance in mississippi, north carolina, and maybemaybe virginia.if you wanna be a friend of mine

All I know...looking at these two together, it WOULD be a dream ticket. However, I don't think that will happen. AG is a lock I would think.0

I am going to endorse my candidate for President after that candidate wins the presidency. What a joke. If Hilary was winning now he'd endorse Hilary. If he had balls he would have endorsed before Pennsylvania.0

And people thought just Barack was an elitist? Add to the ticket the multi-millionaire trial lawyer who lives in the 10,000 sq foot mansion down the street from a trailer park, and gets $400 haircuts. (I love Fox News reporting).
I don't understand all of the love for Edwards all of a sudden. He was a brutal running mate for Kerry, and he was done by the time New Hampshire voted this year. I guess he is good for getting some of the white vote.0 -
This makes me happy. And I just think a white guy from the South being vice to a black guy is the coolest thing... and the will to show I will always be better than before.0

I guess John Edwards is a pussy. And out of the original "mainstream" candidates, he was my favorite.
He seemed WAY more progressive than Obama....I would have expected him to endorse Nader. But then again, that's quite a high expectation. Only the more highly evolved humans can understand how important Nader is to our society.0 -

I just finished reading a part of Obama's first book where he talks about working for a Nader spinoff in the 80s, so I guess you are right... and the will to show I will always be better than before.0 -

i know, just the thought of it makes me all swoony!(and i don't mean in some stupid sexual way, you gutter-dwellers!
)
but i think joe biden would be an excellent choice as obama's running mate. tons of experience, a solid record, a good guy in general, imo. i'm keeping my fingers crossed.
and i DO think Edwards in the AG role would be HEAVEN. we need someone with integrity in that position after these long, dark years of bush."Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States, Barack Obama."
"Obama's main opponent in this election on November 4th (was) not John McCain, it (was) ignorance."~Michael Moore

oh, he is, definitely. he's just not presidential. not by a long shot."Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States, Barack Obama."

Edwards has no integrity. His entire campaign is a sham and ran counter to his actual voting record. And as an ambulance chasing attorney suing doctors, he got fabulously weathly and in the process helped increase insurance premiums and healthcare costs. There is almost nothing good about Edwards other than his beautiful hair."I'll use the magic word - let's just shut the fuck up, please." EV, 04/13/080 -
