Why can't we vote for an Issue? Like, still have a 'face' of the US but only to represent it when need be, wouldn't that stop hypocrisy?

Just a suggestion. Thoughts?

I'm not sure what you're suggesting here. I think national referendums could work for some issues, but we're always going to need elected leaders for many things. How would 300,000,000 people get together and work out a national budget? Also, I don't think I want the average guy on the street deciding defense policy. You probably could have gotten a majority of Americans to vote on 9/12/01 to nuke Afghanistan, but that doesn't mean it would have been a good idea. Hell, even the Bush administration isn't THAT nuts.

Complex issue, but i agree to a point. The idea of voting along party lines, as if one party suits you politically on everything, is ridiculous. It's even more pronounced in a country like Canada where people are not so partisan, and actually think about logic/reasoning wrt certain issues. In Canada, some parties have been totally obliterated in elections b/c the people have had enough, and they virtually erase them from the political landscape.

As for Hippiemom's points, I only partially agree. I think with an informed electorate it could very well work. The problem in the U.S. is that people are psychotically partisan and disregard the facts. Moreover, the average American is far less likely to know about world affairs than someone from other major democracies. It literally took years for the American public to wake up to the lies about Iraq, and the fact that it was a losing proposition.

and what *issue* should it be? i think there are far too many *issues* that require attention, to base votes on JUST one.

ohhhhhhhhhh...i see now. :o haha. err, i don't know that could really work? i mean there still has to be *some* people in there, hashing it all out, representing others' views, etc. so it still comes down to choosing a few to represent many, to work out all the issues.

to get rid of the Republican/Democrat parties altogether. All they've done is caused every good cause to get swallowed up and wallowed deep in arguments. If we could get a good Independent candidate, it would be a first step.

I've advocated that for years now. I would prefer to vote every issue and not vote for one person.
