What makes Presidency elections so alien?

I come from a wee Island known as the UK and when I watch clips on the news of Democrat and Republican conventions I am astounded and dismayed at the passion and faith displayed by those in attendance! To see people shout and scream as they hold up their banners as if they are in the presence of some kind of messiah is just incredible. I don’t mean any disrespect when I say this but it feels at times Americans are from a different planet. I say that because it is all so alien to my part of the world.

I know I can’t be alone in this?

Perhaps some people from the states can offer insight?
Truth is incontrovertible
Panic may resent it
Ignorance may deride it
Mailice may distort it
But there it is

Some people are not too bright.

It's utterly dispicable to see these Repubs all cheering, chanting, booing and behaving like groupies as a rock concert; after all the damage this Republican Party and this Administration have done to this country and the international community, in the last eight years.

If these people had any brains, integrity and honsety; the'd be attending these conventions with a chip on their collective shoulders and severely scrutinize and criticize anything McCain and members of this Party would have to say.

    McCain's speech was laughable.

Line after line.........declarative statement after declarative statement that completely defied facts, historical accuracy, avoided resposibility and accountability; as well as phony, misguided chest thumping...flag waving arrogance disguised as "Patriotism".

    What an embarrassment.

The Republicans in attendance came off like a bunch of brain-washed, small-minded, ignorant fools with no ability to think for themselves. Just slap the "Republican" brandname on it and they're in full support.

I mean really, the Republican Party could have wheeled out the rotting carcass of an elephant, slapped a Republican pin on it, told the audience this was in fact a living, breathing human being and a viable candidate; and those knuckleheads would have pumped their fists, pumped out their chest and vooted and hollared like a bunch of crazed monkeys worshiping the Mighty Golden Banana.
  • The former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt stated: “We humans . . . have always only partially governed the world, and most of the time very badly. . . . We have never governed it in total peace.”

“Do not put YOUR trust in nobles, (politicians) Nor in the son of earthling man, to whom no salvation belongs.” –Psalm 146:3.

I’m sure that some who go into politics genuinely want to make a difference for the good but they fail to realise a basic fact.

“I well know, O Jehovah, that to earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step.” –Jeremiah 10:23

Present world conditions and throughout human history testifies to that very fact.

    What is the solution?

I agree. It's very weird to me as well. I don't really get it. It's not just the republicans either, NMyTree.

No offense, but I don't think religion is the solution at all. First of all, not everyone is a Jehovah's witness. That's a real problem, a lot of people already have a religion, most of them are quite satisfied with it and they happen to believe their religion is the true one, their god is the only one, and their religion is the only way, just like you.

Then there are of course the people who don't believe, to whom arguments like this don't make any sense at all.

"Who from among mankind can match Jesus’ credentials as a Ruler? Jesus has already proved to be a thoroughly righteous, reliable, and compassionate Leader. The Gospels portray him as a man of action as well as one of tender warmth and deep feelings."

Who would make a better leader than Jesus indeed? I mean the man's only been dead for two thousand years. There's not much proof that he actually existed and there's no proof that suggests he was actually the son of god. Except of course for the bible, which was written by man. You might say they were inspired by god, but again, there's no proof to support such claims either.

So, I disagree. I don't think god is the solution.

The fact that anyone can get excited by anything McCain says proves that Republicans are in denial. The fact that Democrats are excited by anything Obama says proves they're easily amused by shiny things with no substance. American politics is all about conning lazy voters who won't vote based on the issues, but who threw the better party. Sad, but true.

Politics in America have always been a three ring circus. Why, I have no clue. One guess is the media. They jump onto the smallest things and blow them out of proportion sometimes. And the scary thing is, a lot of people fall for it.
