Jewish group blasts Romney over launch

Republican Mitt Romney's choice of a museum honoring auto pioneer Henry Ford as the site of his presidential announcement was strongly criticized Monday by Jewish Democrats, who noted Ford's history of anti-Semitism.

The former Massachusetts governor, who is scheduled to formally launch his presidential candidacy from the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., on Tuesday, was taken to task by The National Jewish Democratic Council.

The council "is deeply troubled by Governor Romney's choice of locations to announce his presidential campaign," executive director Ira Forman said in a statement.

"Romney has been traveling the country talking about inclusiveness and understanding of people from all walks of life," Forman said. "Yet he chooses to kick (off) his presidential campaign on the former estate of a well-known and outspoken anti-Semite and xenophobe."

Forman said Romney's "embrace of Henry Ford and association of Ford's legacy with his presidential campaign raises serious questions about either the sincerity of Romney's words or his understanding of basic American history."

Ford was bestowed with the Grand Service Cross of the Supreme Order of the German Eagle by Adolf Hitler.

Eric Fehrnstrom, a spokesman for Romney, said the candidate will go ahead with his announcement as planned.

"Governor Romney believes our country needs to put innovation at the forefront if we are to ensure a stronger, safer and more prosperous America," Fehrnstrom said. "The Ford Museum embodies that bold, innovative spirit."

Fehrnstrom noted that other political leaders have praised Ford in the past. He cited a 1999 speech on small business development in which former President Clinton quoted Ford and praised the "power of enterprise and the strength of the human spirit" of American entrepreneurs.

Some random Jewish group does not speak for Jews world wide. Thats a serious over reaction. Im sure the guy did not even consider Henry Ford by doing that...He was trying to appeal to Labor im sure. The Jewish group is probably one of those facbricated groups that pop up around election time and are usually found to be funded by an opponenet. No harm no foul Romney. Ford was a nazi fuckhead, but im sure he did not intend it that way.

No. I think it might be a little tactless of Romney to make his speech there, but its really not a big deal at all, and I'm sure the majority of Jews don't give two shits.

Did the Jewish Democrats go after Clinton when he made that speech? Everyone's going to have a problem w/ something. Seems like they used the "oppression" angle just b/c he's a Republican.

how is it tactless? regardless of his flaws, ford was a pioneer in american history. sure, he was human and made mistakes. but everyone does. shit, would people bitch about a candidate speaking at monticello becos jefferson owned slaves like everyone else in those days?

this is why americans are so disenchanted. the way we put any public figure's private life under the microscope has lead to a total disenchantment and lack of innocence. becos NOBODY can withstand that kind of scrutiny. NOBODY. this unforgiving attitude has basically meant that americans no longer have any heroes... even our old ones have been destroyed by angry revisionist historians. we're a nation with nobody to root for and nobody to admire. just a bunch of sick and fucked up people lamenting the sick and fucked up people we followed.

The press would have never reported such a story if Hillary or Barack made a speech at the Henry Ford Museum. It would not have been a story which is the way it should be.

Common sense. Look, I am not a right wing nut or some big Fox News fan. As of now Borack would get my vote. It is just my observation that these type of stories always refer to GOP candidates and in my opinion the media leans towards the left.

No, i just said it has gotten to an annoying level. Not that it needs to be stopped. When a commercial has to be pulled because it shows a robot dreaming about jumping off of a bridge or someone is criticized for giving a speech at a museum named after a guy who didn't like Jews a hundred years ago. It has just gone too far in my opinion.

im ok with being called a mick, or a suburban prat, or whatever. yes, PC is ok. there is a line between racism/harassment and being PC. calling someone a nigger and trying to deny them a job is racism. giving a speech at a building dedicated to an american pioneer who happened to be a racist (and im sure the ONLY one this country ever produced) is being PC.
