PANAMA CITY, Panama — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Venezuela's foreign minister fired verbal broadsides at each other Monday over the closure of a key opposition television station in Venezuela.
Rice protested the shuttering of Radio Caracas Television, RCTV, calling it Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez's "sharpest and most acute" move yet against democracy as thousands of university students marched in Caracas to protest.
Venezuela's top diplomat, Nicolas Maduro, then accused her of hypocrisy, unacceptable meddling in his nation's affairs and compared the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and secret prisons elsewhere to something not seen since "the time of Hitler."
Earlier, thousands of Venezuelan students marched in protest of the station's removal, chanting "freedom!" and "we aren't afraid!" as they paraded toward the Supreme Court.
It remains unclear whether their protests will maintain momentum, or whether they will coalesce into a major political force.
I would love to see that exchange. By the way if there were no freedom of speech in Venezuela how con people are protesting in the streets.

Just disregard that Chavez is killing free speech.
can we just get over the "america hater" rhetoric for good? that is about as ignorant as the "they hate us for our freedom" or the "bush is hitler" bullshit.

While I agree with you that Chavez is slowly choking democracy out of Venezuala I have to agree with voiceinside because Condi and this entire administration are hypocrites. My case is Luis Posada Carilles. A well known terrorist who was involved in the 1976 bombing of a Cubana Air plane, killing all 73 on board, and the assasination of Chilean envoy Orlando Letelier in 1976 in Dupont Circle in Washington DC. He was recently released from prison, where he was being held on illegal immigration charges. Both Venezuela, may I add we have had a signed extradition treaty with Venezuela since 1922, and Cuba have requested his extradition to face charges on the Cubana Air bombing and the bombing of Cuban hotels in 1997 that killed an Italian tourist. Both requests have been denied by the US government. So much for our war against terrorism and the whole you aid and/or provide safe haven for terrorists that makes you a terrorist as well speech.
it's all they got ... let them have it ...
Just how is it that he is killing free speech? because he didnt renew a television station license. what do you think would happen if one day CNN would start a saying that they should take out the president and entice a revolution. They would be shut down. Every goverment has the right to defend themselves. The only reason people hate Chavez is because he is a socialist.

Well, if that's the only criteria please tell Eddie Vedder to shut the hell up about it then.
He's way more than a socialist imo...Chirac is a socialist..Chavez is bordering on being a dictator. His mentor is Castro for cying out loud.
yeah, yeah. I dont see what he big deal is. Look the people who ran this station
wanted Chavez dead. the were saying it constantly over the air. It got to the point that it incited a cou de tat(sp?). To me Chavez biggest mistake was not shutting them down right after the cou. It not like tv stations and radio stations in the US havent been shut down by he goverment. Again if it was Lou Dobbs saying that a milicia should be form to assasinate the president, what would happen?
Chavez is trying to supress freedom of speech in Venezuela. The only national media outlet that actually voiced any oppostion to Chavez was this station. Regardless of their view of Chavez they should be allowed to express it.
Even if they tried to get him killed.
They where not trying to get him killed. They openly called for his removal and openly expressed their opposition to his acts but they where not calling for his assasination. There are plenty of media outlets here in the states that make the same statements about Bush and they are not shut down by the government. Even if one on air personality did make comments about killing Chavez you fine or fire him/her not close down the whole station.
If Chavez let other private media outlets freely operate, then maybe I could go along with him shutting down this one radical station out of safety or whatever. The problem is that he as been systematically pressuring and shutting down all private media outlets.
He is shutting down free speech, I don't see how someone could argue that.

the station wasnt closed, they just did not renew its license. the people new he was going to do it.
not renewing a broadcasting license = shutting down the station

Not renewing the station's license is just another way of saying he closed it down. Without the license they can not broadcast effectively closing the business.
yeah i Know. Im not pro chavez or anything. Was just trying to be objective. the thing here is why should we care what path the people of venenzuela choose to go. If they want that type of goverment then its their country. let them do what ever they want. If this was going on in indonesia nobody would give a shit.
I agree with you 100%. What goes on beyond our borders, as long as it is not a threat to our security, is no business of ours. Of course though the US government has always considered Central/South American as it's toy box to do as it pleases with.
