Story Of Stuff

Not sure if anyone has posted about this video yet (sorry if it's been covered) but it's something that I just came across. It has some great information about the process of "stuff" and the environmental impact of our consumerist habits.

I had environmental chemistry in college and learned about a lot of this, the professor was an awesome old tree hugging lady :) I remember being devastated when I found out how much waste comes from recycling, but it's better than just trashing everything (the amount of reclaimable aluminum from a soda can is quite small once you pull out all the trace metals, paint, etc). But don't think thats a reason to not recycle!!

Her info and ideas on the government's relationship with big corporations was quite informative for me.

As for dumping our waste in third world countries, I believe it was National Geographic than ran a long article on that recently. The circle of needing to make money to survive, getting sick doing it, needing money for doctors, needing to work more with what got you sick in the first place to make more money, then dying from it...

wow, i've never seen that before, thanks a lot for posting it

looks like we need more ppl fighting for us instead of just going along...ppl like nader and kucinich (true visionaries)...yeah, i said it!! :D none of the 3 corporate candidates will do anything described in that video other than maintain the flow

i liked the part at the end (paraphrasing) "now, some ppl will say this is unrealistic or too idealistic, but what's unrealistic is the thought that we can continue on living this way. ppl created this problem and it takes ppl to stop it"
    standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
    eager to identify with
    someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way
  • yeah I posted this link a couple months ago. I really like that little video. I have a graduate degree in basically this very issue, and the video still inspired me and put things in a way that was somewhat new to me. it's a good "reminder." Everyone should watch it.
  • I think this is the third time it's been posted...doesn't matter..
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.
