As the American loving fool on the radio this morning was quick to point out. Worst shooting in New Zealand and worst school shoot up, Canada. This according to the guy on the radio. He had to omit the amount of times this happens in the States. Kind of a slight oversight as to the amount of violence that really goes on down there which involves guns. Ooops, the morning jock just had a brain fart.

And not all of the school shootings are widely reported. This is one from a school my niece attended at the time of the shooting. Luckily no one was killed but she still has nightmares from it.

11/22/2004 - Jon Romano, pled guilty to three counts of Attempted Murder in the First Degree

District Attorney Patricia DeAngelis announces today that Jon Romano, (D.O.B. 10/30/87) of 24 Petalas Drive, East Greenbush, New York, pled guilty to three counts of Attempted Murder in the First Degree, a Class B Violent Felony, and six counts of Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, a class D non-violent felony, before the Hon. Patrick J. McGrath, in Rensselaer County Court.

He is facing 20 years in state prison and 5 years post release supervision when he is sentenced on December 20, 2004.

On February 9, 2004, Jon Romano, a 16-year-old junior at Columbia High School, in East Greenbush, Rensselaer County, New York, opened fire inside his high school with a 12-gauge shotgun, firing three rounds. Two rounds were aimed directly at two students in the hallway. Miraculously, neither child was hurt. One child’s baseball hat was hit from pellets from the gun. Assistant Principal John Sawchuck saw Romano with the weapon and wrestled him to the ground. In the midst of wrestling him, Special Education teacher Michael Bennett was wounded in the leg. Several students were on the floor where the shooting occurred. There were 82 victims named in the indictment and the defendant’s actions endangered the lives of many children. This incident spread fear among thousands of children and parents.

    D. A. DeAngelis said, “My number one concern is for the thousands of children who go to our schools in Rensselaer County. When a parent sends a child to school, they have an absolute right to expect that their child will return home safely. The school environment should be conducive to learning. This sentence sends a strong message to any person who is contemplating committing any act of violence in our schools. There is no room for fear in the classroom. There is no room for violence in our schools.”

    D. A. DeAngelis commented on the heroic acts of Assistant Principal John Shawchuck and Special Education teacher Michael Bennett:

“We will never know how many lives these men saved because of their bravery. The children at Columbia High School learned a lesson of incredible courage from Mike and John on February 9, 2004. These men are, in every sense of the word, heroes.”
