What a fucking joke. And so Gordon Brown, leader of a so called "socialist" party, takes one step closer to being a full-blown tory boy...

Seriously, would this guy who is proposing this actually expect teenagers to stand up and take an oath to the Queen?!

I saw this being discussed on the news this morning and other than the guy who proposed it no one thought it was a good idea ... you could tell the presenters were having to try hard to make it look like they were taking it seriously as an idea.

Don't think it would ever happen. There will be no popular support for it.
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

Good job too. I would find it hard to stay sane in a country in which you HAD to pledge allegiance to the Queen :p

Thing is, the article implies that Gordon Brown is the one who suggested that the guy look into ideas of "britishness" and national identity.

I remember I used to stay seated and sing Irish rebel songs at school here, during God Save The Queen in assemblies and prizegivings. ;)

You have to pledge allegiance to the queen if ya wanna be an australian citizen :o that's the reason my sisters fiancee and his family never got one... even though they lived there for 15 years or something.

I think that's fucking ridiculous... how does gritting your teeth and saying something nice about the queen prove you'll be a good australian citizen?

i'd be more than happy to write a letter to my school and have all 3 of my kids NOT swear allegiance and that i am more than happy to be held responsible for that.

I'd go to jail to uphold that belief.

Agreed. I will also go to jail to uphold my belief that I shouldn't have to carry one of those ID cards around when they finally come into usage.

Why do governments think that they own people?! It's sounds naive of me but it's not, I just genuinely don't see how that works.

Presumably that's not the same for British people? That's even dumber if it is.

But seriously, telling an irish person to pledge allegiance to the queen... jaysus bloody wept.

I presume not but I dunno... this is for the citizenship. They were legal over there and still are but they'll never apply for citizen.

I don't see how it works either :(

  • Who the heck is going to do this? They'll all be wearing ipods tunes cranked, or fidgeting with a cell phone, and not be paying attention anyways...

Did the queen have a strange dream one day or is she finally going senile in public proper?

I think perhaps she senses the sun is setting, and is yearning for the glorious days of old prior to departure.

A good peruse through old photo albums could also be the culprit....
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

I friend of mine here in Canada, applied for UK citizenship and he had to swear a loyalty oath to the Queen. I think you have to do the same thing if you want a federal government job.

I don't think this has anything to do with the queen. It's that fuckin prick Brown. He stutters from one ludicrous idea to the next desperate to gain some respect. Hopefully at the next election we can get rid of the tosser, quite who we'll vote for is worrying though. Swearing allegiance and ID cards soon. I'm out of here as soon as poss and as the saying goes "would the last one leaving please turn out the lights".

I guess it's one way of seeing how much ya really wanna be a citizen... make them do the most disgusting thing possible... if they want it that bad, they'll do it... if they don't they won't :p

we should make people swear allegiance to bono :p

so I guess it's fair to say that whoever DOES take this oath... is definitely a terrorist.
