Pennsylvania:

"Family members of a serviceman or woman killed while serving on active military duty can apply to the state for a "Gold Star" Pennsylvania state vehicle license plate, under legislation approved unanimously by the Senate. The Service Flag Gold Star would appear on the license plate rimmed with blue - which represents sacrifice for liberty and freedom - and accompanied by the words, "Gold Star Family."

but does it match my car color? that's what's important. :)

Hmmm celebrating and recognizing soldiers who gave their lives for this country... yeah that's something to mock and laugh about. I'm sure their families would appreciate that.

"servicemen or women killed while on active military duty".. I think that would qualify as giving their lives for their country. Yeah the family gets the plate, to celebrate the serviceperson. Similar to how vets can get license plates to honor their service time. That clear it up for you???

well i think it's a poor trade off for those service men and women who have been killed in iraq. they died for nothing. or i should say, they died for a license plate.

Your belief but I don't believe that they nor most of their families feel that way. Remember the armed forces are voluntary.

    it's a tribute... and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
    ...
I would like to see some way of Identifying Veterans. Especially the living veterans... the ones with obvious wounds and the ones with hidden wounds. The ones that civilians cannot cope with because they have trouble with everyday things because of the brain injury they recieved when the force of that I.D.E. in Fallujah slamed their Kevlat helmet into their skull, causing brain damage. americans need to know who these people are and thank them... instead of calling them assholes and yelling at them to get out of the way.

You don't really think about things do you? It's not an insult, just an observation.

I often see license plates signifying a disabled American verteran. I don't agree with war, but there are people who are proud of their service and would display it in that way.

I disagree with those in this thread who think it's in poor taste.

well, first of all, I think there are many different ways to serve your country besides war, like paying taxes.

Secondly, if a person is disabled, it shouldn't matter if they got that way from war, everyone deserves respect.

Finally, there is no monatary gain from the license plate thing. But when you slap it on your gas-guzzling SUV it makes a good symbol for the war in Iraq. And if the recipient doesn't own a car?

from what i gathered, the only recipients are those that apply for the plate.

This is amazing. Governments offer people an option of how to pay tribute to a lost loved one and people have a problem with it. Truely amazing.

the problem is that those stars shouldn't exist.

it reminds me of a proposed epa plan to test pesticides on poor children in florida. the families would receive a video camera to tape the progress, and a t-shirt. all that for a lifetime of health problems for your child. what a deal!!!

I think we should send them a cookie too...I mean, don't get me wrong. Nothing says "Hey, sorry our lies got your son/daughter/brother/sister/mother/father killed" like a good license plate...but a cookie would really make it special.

...just an attempt to create the belief that this war is legitimate and something to be proud of.

as said before... it's a tribute. It honors their service and their life. It might not mean much to you but I'm sure the families appreciate the gesture.

  • ok....this is coming from a girl who is very anti-war and anti-bush...i am not anti-troops....these men and women signed up to be a part of the military for various reasons including the money they receive for education. It is by no way their fault that they died in iraq or wherever they died give them some respect for sacrificing their lives by only doing what they are told!!!...many of them did not expect to go to war over nothing (my opinion)...many of them are not going to quit.....do not blame them, blame bush.....let the families honor their loved one however they choose......i really respect the POW/MIA stickers signs i see everywhere....why can't you respect a family who misses a loved one who died only doing what they were told to do....i am sure they are NOT (ok maybe not all) proud of the damn war, but proud of their family member who was willing to do what i would never do....some are right...i serve my country in my own way.....never the military....people who lose loved ones in other ways show their loss in their own way...i am notone of those who drives around with a yellow ribbon....i am not that kind of person....i would drive around witha breast cancer ribbon if anything at all....
