Ireland still in the middle ages regarding abortion!

The fact that this girl had to even GO to court to sort this out... actually the fact that her BOYFRIEND had to go to court on her behalf as she's 'a minor'... defies belief. Who do these people think they are? Sounds like she's been through enough crap already. She was placed in care after seemingly her mother could not take care of her. Her father's absent. Then she's told her baby has a fatal condition and will NOT live longer than 2 or 3 days. THEN she's told she cannot travel to England for the abortion... what the fuck?

:( It's ridiculous. It's amazing how someone can leave home when they're 16 I think but if you're in care, you're still a minor at 17? I just don't get it.

Imagine that they're actually trying to force her to carry this baby to term for a further 5 months even though she knows it will die :( . I really cannot understand what planet these people are on.

Dunk, apparently not. I don't know how it works myself as I've never had an abortion and we just say 'going to England' but I presume women can go to Scotland or Wales too... so by that presumption, I'm presuming that SHE can't.

I'm presuming that the judge will overthrow the decision of the HSE to ban her from travelling... but it's just the fact that it had to go this far is actually making me pretty fucking angry.

    I agree with you totally.

I mean in so many ways we have moved on and surpassed quite a few countries and we tend to think of ourselves as so advanced... til something like this happens

I think we're ready for a new abortion referendum... and NOT one like the silly one we had the last time where yes meant no and no meant yes

It must be so tough for her... surely even the ANTI abortion people can see the stupidity of this one.

This is disgraceful. It's the hangover from the puritanical church state that my parents grew up in. Luckily the Church are losing power with every passing year. With a bit of luck the next generation won't have to put up with this shit.

Hopefully :( . I feel so sorry for all the women and girls who have to travel to England for an abortion cos I'd imagine it's hard enough as it is... 7,000 a year. It doesn't just go away if we ignore it or send them to be part of Englands problem

Irelands judicial system was fucked from the moment DeValera put pen to paper, it emobodies Roman Catholic dogma which is forced upon the systems participants regarding Judges' decisions and has been for the best part of a century. The word archaic doesn't even cover it.

I love to agree, but every referendum regarding abortion has brought out a bunch of bible hugging cave dwellers that unfortuneatley in the majority. Its her body at the end of the day and the only thing that could nulify that mantra doesn't factor in as her boyfriend SUPPORTS her decision.

Of course he supports it... the baby has no head :( .

You're right about that... we just about passed the LAST referendum which was to recognise suicide as a threat to the mothers life.

BUT it's been a long time since we've had an outright 'yes to abortion, no to abortion' referendum... and I reckon within the next ten years the young will outweigh the old. You'd also expect a bigger turnout from young people. It's not like a general election, it's something that could effect ANY of them.

I think it was in the early 80s. We've had ones since to tighten the laws on travel a bit... like to ensure women ARE free to travel... and abortion in cases where the woman's life is in danger is legal so there was a referendum to clarify whether her being suicidal would qualify as her life being in danger.

thats a cop-out Hells... you know what i meant

just as it fucks you off about the 'mainland' it fucks me off when people just say England!!! its called the NHS and therefore my tax money is going to all the services on offer by the NHS... Scotland will perform abortions on irish women... no doubt about it.

i'd have thought better of you if you'd just admitted your faux pas... but no you had to try a meek and timid defence of it :p

No honestly... I've only ever heard girls say they're going to England cos that's where they were going

I presume some girls DO go to Scotland or Wales but they would certainly not say they were going to England if that were the case...

    Thanks for posting this Helen.

This situation is appalling and I cannot believe that any organization purporting to be a health service could attempt to manipulate anyone in this manner.

do you think if there was another referendum that the result would be different?

i think the country has changed a fair bit since the early 80s (ie less catholic church influenced, more secular etc) & would be interested in what you thought yourself

I cannot even imagine what goes through some people's minds.

It makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

I couldn't live with myself if I inflicted this kind of physical, emotional and psychological trauma on another human being.

I do hope that some positive change does come from this case though.

I'm not sure... I know the latest referendum on abortion (the one regarding suicide as a threat to life) was seriously close. Actually I just looked it up and it was 50.42% to 49.58% . The total turnout however was only 42.89%

    http://www.ireland.com/focus/abortion/news/0307/breaking1.htm

Just looking through some of the other news sources at the time, Bertie Ahern warned before that referendum that a no vote would lead to abortion on demand

    http://www.ireland.com/focus/abortion/news/0304/breaking4.htm

    Right!

That was only 5 years ago so I think we'd need to leave it another 7 or 8 years unfortunately :( . Thing about abortion is that you have the old people totally against it, middle aged people probably split, young men split and young women probably mostly for it.

I see he also tried some scare tactics :(

'The Taoiseach also said that if the Government's proposal was defeated it would very difficult for any Government to revisit the issue and it would not be something he would "be returning to in a hurry'
