Dry counties?

In Alabama, a city or town in a dry county can now hold an election to determine if the city or town goes wet while the rest of the county remains dry. I know of at least one city that has gone wet while its surrounding county remained dry.

Draft beer just became legal in Montgomery, Alabama after banned for years. The legalization of draft beer was tied to a new baseball stadium and Class AA professional team for the city, the Montgomery Biscuits.

There is a movement afloat trying to legalize beers with an alcohol content over 5% in the state. This rule would also allow the sale of beer in containers larger than a pint. It's looking good right now for this bill to pass the legislature this year.

One of Great-grandfathers was a moonshiner/bootlegger here in Central Alabama back in the days before and after Prohibition. He lived in what was a dry county at the time.

Cullman County Alabama was established by German immigrants. It is still a wet county, and the home of the world's only "dry" Oktoberfest.

This is probably the silly shit that evenflow? mentioned in an earlier post...we had a pm exchange about it awhile back, and he laughed at me too.

It is quite beyond silly......I think that we are one of four remaining states with this dumbass rule.

    :D Does indeed! :)

So Nick, you need to get 1/3 of the electorate to sign a petition in order for it to go to the ballots? Would that be an option then? I know I would :) just to piss them there ole folks off :)

Theoretically you could get a petition of 1/3 of the registered votors....but in the last presidential election, about 25% of the registered voters turned out to vote.

If that few voters actually voted, you can imagine how difficult it is to get 1/3 to sign a petition. (for other matters, 10% must sign a petition, but for this one issue it is 33%). The hurdle is insurmountable to get the issue on the ballot again. We are working to get the state legislature to change this....but we are making little headway right now.

Yeah, but we are not that well funded. We need lots of $$$$ to pay people, or lots of volunteers to get that many signautres.

Believe, me it has been tried, but it is extraordinarily difficult to get that many registered voters to sign. We would need lots and lots of volunteers. Furthermore, there would be a legal action to claim the petition was illegal (there is a well funded group who opposes this sort of thing). I am telling you, it has been tried many times, but it is just too damn hard.

We need to get the legislature to change the requirment to 10% first, and then it will still be a hard effort, but the goal would be attainable.

 could that maybe be more of a money thing? All shots here are poured from measurements... and you rarely get a bartender going OVER the measurement.
I'm not sure if it was a money thing. All I know is, I went there once on vacation and about went broke after one night in a bar.

No heavy pours for you? What, don't ya tip your bartenders? ;)

  • The city I live in was dry up until last year, when we voted to allow alcohol to be served/sold within city limits. It was rediculous prior to that. There would be no alcohol sold at the Kroger two blocks from my apartment, however, I could drive a block up the hill the other way and buy all the beer I want at another Kroger. Also, the grocery stores sell watered down liquer. You have to go to a State Liquer Agency to get the real stuff... or a bar.

My bootlegging, home brewing family voted every election to keep the good old home county dry....going wet would have (and eventually did) kill the family business. Heck, we were just local entrepeneurs....

In Texas it is down to the city-level. You can have a city (like Dallas) where it is dry in some parts of the city and wet in others. All of South Dallas is dry while north of the Trinity River, the majority of the city is wet.

So in South Dallas, if you want a beer all you have to do is walk across the border into a suburb like Duncanville, etc. and go to the 7-11 or whatever.

Where I live (McKinney), we sell beer and wine but no liquor. 10 minutes to the north in Anna, in the same county, you can buy liquor.

    Its crazy.

Lol, no! They'd be sacked in some pubs anyway if they were caught 'being generous'. doesn't it defeat the purpose though when ya think about it? Owners pay their staff fuck all, customers tip and get more drink because they tip... so aren't they basically paying for more drink... but that money goes into the staff members pocket rather than the till? Why can't he just pay more, the customer pays for the drink only and all the money goes in the till? :p

There is a county in Maryland...Garrett...that doesn't sell any alcohol on Sundays.

LOL! Yep, its true! First time I ever knew of them was when I went south to visit my ex's family. I was about 17. Totally dry county, but bootleggers would go to the other county and bring it in and sell it as bootleg. Like, there was a shack behind this church and they would sell it out of the shack. They had a hand written sign on it saying what they had and the prices. I was shocked...lol!
There was a well worn path around the shack from the traffic. Right behind the church!!! They mostly sold beer, but we also knew a family that sold liquor out of their house. Lots of money to be made for bootleggers. They only had to go 20 miles and buy the stuff and they made a fortune.
That county is wet now. What they did is first allow beer and wine only, then later, all alcohol could be sold.
I sometimes forget about dry counties in the south. One time, I went into a store to buy beer and couldn't find it. I asked the help and they looked at me shocked...and then said "its a dry county".
I do remember that teens would still drink in these dry counties. They would sit in their cars along some country road and get drunk. They would have like a mini party. They could buy at the bootleggers just as easy as adults.

Its not that common as it used to be. Either way, counties aren't that big and one can always drive a bit and buy alcohol.
    Save room for dessert!

    Ha! Really? That's funny.

The thing is, its kind of like a domino, or a waterfall. Once one town in the dry county starts selling (because they need the tax revenue) the others follow eventually. Anna and Melissa and Frisco start selling beer and wine, McKinney followed later. Anna now sells liquor (and is the current oasis in the county). It won't be long before the other towns follow. Although liquor is usually a tougher sell to the voters than beer and wine.

Be careful what you wish for! You're going to lose about half of your retail space, because it's apparently necessary for there to be at least one Tim Horton's for every hundred yards of storefronts.
