Just another example of confidential and very sensitive personal material being treated as rubbish!

AIB officials have begun examining documents relating to the bank, which were uncovered at a former landfill site in Co Cork.

It is understood that the documents relate to loan applications and to customer statements.

The AIB documents were found at the former Killacloyne landfill site near Glounthaune in east Cork.

The officials are expected to remain at the site while a refuse contractor with specialist equipment sifts through the material.

In April, confidential medical files of hundreds of people were uncovered at the same site.

They contained the names, addresses, dates of birth, medical conditions and treatments of people who attended a number of Cork hospitals from the 1970s to mid-1980s.

The Health Service Executive has sealed the site, initiated an investigation and promised to recover any other files which were buried there.

The AIB documents were discovered while a contractor was sifting through material at the site searching for other medical files.

The bank has confirmed that an investigation has begun, but a spokeswoman said no further comment would be made until the documents and the site have been examined later today.

She said the offices of the Financial Regulator and Data Protection Commissioner would be informed of the discovery 'as appropriate'.

Data Commissioner Billy Hawkes told RTÉ News he would be concerned if confidential financial information was dumped in this way.

A spokeswoman for Financial Regulator Patrick Neary said he has repeatedly stressed the need for financial institutions to have adequate systems and controls in place to protect client confidentiality.

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

'humour' in quotes? you should try it sometime... i find it de-stresses me :)

why do i need to offer explanations? people are retards and they make mistakes.. sometimes these mistakes mean there might not be any hob-nobs for the bosses at break time... sometimes the mistakes are monumental and mean stuff like this gets left on a landfill.

its happened before and it'll happen again.. although if they went digital and stored all this stuff on hugely encrypted software that once unplugged for longer than 72 hours destroys itself then these things will go on.

but what's your point on this thread?

all you did was start it with a sentence saying it was being treated as rubbish... ok it should have been shredded or something.... but its 30 or so years old?

but yeah, they should have been more careful... nobodies going to argue that with you

My point is that PEOPLE will always fuck up. Some people are perfectly happy with all kinds of governments and companies having all the private information they want on us (even when it's unnecessary... unlike hospitals and banks where there's obviously a necessity for this info) forgetting that even if it's stored electronically... it's still PEOPLE accessing it... it's still PEOPLE who are probably capable of printing it, memorising it, sharing it, losing it on a train, doing whatever the fuck they want with it.

but there is a necessity for it.. so what do you propose!!

well these institutions have strict rules regarding confidentiality... and yet THEY still frequently fuck up. So obviously the best way is that as little people as possible have access to this info so that only a handful of people can be personally accountable. There's no need to share certain confidential information with even MORE institutions
