Hahahaha... this has to be the worst non starter ever... trying to get taxi drivers to keep their opinions to themselves? :D

Ireland's Fine Gael party want to ban Dublin's taxis from displaying bumper stickers that proclaim which way their drivers' intend to vote in Thursday's referendum on the EU reform treaty.

The main opposition party, which has joined the government in the campaign to support the treaty, has proposed a ban on political slogans being displayed on taxis, arguing they are out of place on "public transport vehicles".

In the lead up to the vote more and more taxis in the Irish capital have worn stickers declaring "I'm voting no".

"If it's not illegal, it's highly inappropriate," senior Fine Gael lawmaker Olivia Mitchell said in a statement.

A 62-year-old Dublin taxi driver, who identified himself as Ronan, said everyone should have the right to express their views, adding he would vote "No" because he did not understand the treaty and did not want to "take a chance on it".

"If I wanted to vote "Yes", would they object to that if I put a sticker on my car with it?," he said.

Ireland is the only one of the EU's 27 member states holding a referendum on the treaty -- meaning country accounting for less than 1 percent of the bloc's 490 million population could derail the pact.

Recent polls show the "No" vote gaining ground.

It probably is a non-starter ... but what I picked up on ... which I know it may be the Government's fault for not explaining it ... but going to the effort to put a sticker on your taxi saying which way you're voting when you don't fully understand what you're voting for :o

I see where you're coming from... but there are many multi millionaire business men saying they'd need months to decipher it... it is created for that purpose... the fact that there have been months of debate and still nobody is clearer means that there are many loopholes in there to be exploited. This is a main reason many are voting no.

Just speaking personally, i'd rather trust a man (Edit: person!) who ignorantly said "no" to the man, than one who ignorantly says "yes". i think thats probably the quarter of irish blood in me speaking, and its the part i trust most right now, t'be sure!! :)

:) Nice post! There are plenty who will ignorantly say yes to the man today though :(

There are also those of a certain age group who are afraid that if we vote no, Europe will punish us greatly, probably by kicking us out and leaving us to fend for ourselves... and things will go back to how they were in famine times :( . Most people I've spoken to who are voting yes, seem to be doing so out of either ignorance or fear :(
