What the hell is wrong with kids today? Is it being desensitized to violence? No parental oversight? Lack of discipline at home and school? I cannot figure it out and it's scary.

By Ashley Fantz
(CNN) -- Egged on by a 17-year-old, two 10-year-old boys joined in the attack of a homeless man, leaving him bruised and bloody Tuesday, Daytona Beach Police said.

The incident highlights an upswing in violent crime across the U.S. against the homeless.

In 2006, there were 142 attacks and 20 murders, several involving teenagers seeking a vicious thrill, according to the Washington, D.C.-based National Coalition for the Homeless.

The incident, which took place in Daytona Beach, Florida, may make history, said the nonprofit's acting executive director Michael Stoops.

"If we're talking about 10-year-olds, that means we've hit an all-time low," said Stoops. "The youngest person to have ever been arrested for a crime like this is 13." (Read CNN's exclusive story about homeless 'sport killings')

Daytona Police Sgt. Billy Walden said the teen and two boys were walking in their neighborhood around 9 p.m. when they saw 58-year-old John D'Amico. They began throwing rocks at the homeless man.

The 17-year-old, Jeremy Woods, punched D'Amico who then fell over a concrete wall. As he lay on the ground, one of the 10-year-olds -- whose names are not being released -- used parts of the concrete to bash D'Amico in the head, a police report shows. (Watch cuffed 10-year-olds in court)

D'Amico's eye was severely damaged in the attack. Woods and the two boys were charged with felony aggravated battery and are being held without bond at a juvenile detention center in Daytona Beach, Walden said.

The Volusia County State Attorneys Office received paperwork on the case late Thursday and will make a decision about whether to pursue adult charges, said spokeswoman Linda Pruitt.

The three boys made their first court appearance Wednesday wearing ankle shackles and handcuffs, and white jail jumpsuits too big for the two tiny 10-year-old frames. Judge Peter Marshall assigned them public defenders.

i doubt that was their first offence somehow. if your juvenile justice system is anything like qld, australia's, then no doubt they'll be roaming free quick smart.

I am in need of a new dvd for my beat up bums collection. When children attack bums will work just fine. $19.99 plus shipping, can't "beat" it.

It's the parent's fault. I've said it several times, but if we start having parents pay the punishment for their children's crimes - i.e. jail time for assault in this case - we might start seeing some parents actually start paying attention to their kids.

I like this idea. I remember a few years ago some city started putting parents in jail when their kids skipped school after so many warnings. It worked in that situation.

Then give the parents a choice to let the kids get taken away in live in a foster home. Just an idea, if the units can't keep the little kids in line.

I have known kids who were complete assholes when I was young and their parents are fantastic people that made many many attempts to control their kid...we are talking a mother that was a teacher and a father an RCMP officer....sometimes kids are just fucked up...to lay blame on parents in 100% of the situations is not the right thing...not saying that a large part of the problem does not lie with the parents...just think to blame every parent is not the best approach.....

To add-in the older brother of this kid was the complete role model for how childern should behave.....

Indirectly related to the parents though could maybe the becoming ever so common 50+ hour work week for one (or both) of the parents be contributing...what, you going to throw parents in jail because they cannot spend enough time as they want with their children because they are trying to support the family (something common in low wage families...where mothers/fathers work 2+ jobs)....just a thought....

that's why people should really look into their own situations before becoming parents if you now you are to work all these hrs and have no time to really be there for the kids, you should rethink or use fucking birth control.that's just my thoughts....

The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever. Because this is just a ride." And we...kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this ride, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok? But it doesn't matter, because it's just a ride. And we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

Maybe it's just the kids free-will, huh, did you ever think of that?

Seriously, you aren't going to find one cause for their behavior.

The way society in general treats homeless people might be a start though.

Yeah...but our status in life never remains constant there are many ups and downs...you could be very well stable and you have some kids, one day you wind up with your highing paying job being cut, there are bills to pay, you need then find work anywhere...life is not this simple, yeah there are many people that should not have kids because they can barely support themselves...my point being that solely blaming ALL parents for fucking dumb kids is absurd...some kids are beyond help for whatever reason....you cannot keep an eye on them forever.....yes I do believe parents are to blame MOST of the time...what gets me is to punish parents for bad behaviour of their children when no one can prove that is the case for a lot of situations....as someone said there are some diabolical kdis out there that are immature and could potentially use this against their parents for some lame reason.....seriously the jail for parents because of their kids bad behaviour would never work....too much grey area....

If the parents are punished for their children's mistakes (although in this situation, calling their actions a 'mistake' is a gross understatment), then how are the kids going to learn anything? And don't tell me they'll learn cos they'll see their parents in jail or what not and they'll have to go live elsewhere, which ill upset them, because that doesn't work. Also, if parents are jailed then what happens to the siblings? All the kids go off and stay with grandma and grandpa, or worse, foster care?
Kids need to be held accountable for their actions when they're young, or they'll gorw up to become adults who have learned to blame their behaviour on others and therefore never accept responsibilty for their actions or choices in life, whether they be positive or negative.

I agree - they're treated as people who don't matter. This society can be quite blame-the-victim, like the person who's homeless is bad, or its their fault. Even if it is, (and I'm not saying it is in most cases, but there might be some) they deserve to live without being beaten up. I think the 17 year old bears some serious responsibility here. Little kids look up to bigger kids and are likely to be influenced by them.

  • This is an example of how terible people can be. If his life isn't hard enough, even if it is is fault. I agree that the 17 year old should be largely at fault
