I just finished a book by Jane Goodall, Harvest for Hope. In it she writes "Belo Horizonte, Brazil, which is the only city in the capitalist world that has decided to make food security a right of citenzenship."

In your neck of the woods, what would food security as a right of citenzenship look like?

Well, here's a thought. Food security can only be a viable option if those in government think it won't cost an arm and a leg. Because of this, most of the food can not imported from outside the local community as that would increase costs. In this way, support of local farmers, and education for apartment or community gardening would need to be developed. Food education and preparation could be a part of the school curriculums as with Alice Water's Edible Schoolyard project.

Homeless shelters would have links to local farmers, and other sources of food. The farming practices have to be sustainable to the soil. Monocrops that are not rotated deplete the nutrients in the soil. There needs to be consideration of this when deciding what local farmers to support. Those that could sustain years of city investment for the project are those that respect the soil as a living entity and respect the growing seasons.

Just a start thinking about it.

food security would mean that we are able to plant and grow our own food staples without interference from a corporate conglomerate....

this means that we would stand together as HUmans, and protect our natural right to grow and produce our own staples.

food security means that business can't put harmful components in candy, gum, boxed goods (prepackaged--hamburger helper type), or our beverages.

food security means that pharmeceutical companies wont be able to put a claim on herbal components, such as ginseng, milk thistle extract, or other herbal supplements...

have you ever looked at ingredients of a pack of gum?

great topic, too bad, we as a collective noun, are too busy...

    our foodstuff these days.

I read all the stories, and I'm growing my own peppers on the fire escape outside my kitchen window. I figure I could live on peppers for about a month, at least. And that's long enough to educate everybody else about US farming and how it's been thrown out the window and overseas (sorry, NC, but tobacco ain't a real crop).

"Made In China" was cute when it was tagged onto little Chinese dolls. It stopped being cute when we realized what a sweat shop is.

It started to become deadly when our pets became ill due to wheat gluten made with plastics and poisons, and our childrens' toys contain lead, and our toothpaste now contains Who knows what.

NAFTA my ass. NAFTA our lives. NAFTA us to death, why don't you?

If NY passed a law that guaranteed food security as a right of citizenship, what would that look like?

Not to rain on the parade, and maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but CLA is pro-pesticides, right? Their actions would contradict your first sentence:

food security would mean that we are able to plant and grow our own food staples without interference from a corporate conglomerate....

Again, tell me if I'm wrong. I have no problem admitting I'm wrong when proven wrong.

I believe enough food can be grown to feed all without corporations invested interest in the use of chemicals to support monocrop agriculture, and devastation of topsoil. There's just the big issue of distribution management.

Standing in lower lake california looking towards south west, Calpine Geyeser in northern cali coastal mountains...this habitat once fed indigenous populatons; home to deer, wild boar, brown bear, and this is a great measurement of how humans molest; i called it rape but me good doctor says there is implication that there is a willingness...we can protect our selves, but who is gonna protect the silent population...?

somewhere to the right of where vineyards are placed, is Konocti Conservation Camp, where inmates are used in fire camp...you see, the concept of it all, is overwhelming to me...
