I don't smoke, nor will I ever but this morning some shit happened that got me really stressed out so I went out to go buy a pack of cigrettes. They carded me and said sorry we cannot sell to you. I was like what the fuck why not? Apparently you have to be 19 to buy a pack of cigrettes and a lighter here on Long Island. Apparently its been like this for 2 years, that was my first time trying to buy cigarettes so I had no idea.

Thats total bullshit, I'm 18...Turning 18 isn't what it used to be, the only right you get is to vote, and if you fuck up you get jail time.

If you can die at war at 18 and vote at 18, why the fuck can't you buy a pack of cigarettes and drink?

if you dont smoke why did you want to buy a pack of ciggys? but I understand what you are saying. you should be able to get some at 18. maybe states can decide the age limit?

drinking though? I think 21 is fine. drinking is a dangerous thing. dangerous in the sense that drinking and driving kills.

The logic behind 21 was explained to me this way by a state of Ga representative.

The age is 21 because we found many 18 year olds are still in contact with 15-17 year olds providing them much easier access to alcohol. It was to reduce the amount of drunken driving fatalities and underage drinking issues relating to teens.

Obviously it's not really a big deal if 18 year olds drink or do anything else responsibly but that's how it was explained to me anyway.

Sorry you couldn't buy cigs, but you aren't missing out anyway imho.

This is one of the first instances you'll remember with the frustrating incomprehensible nature of government.

The two don't go hand in hand though.
    Astoria 20/04/06, Leeds 25/08/06, Prague 22/09/06, Wembley 18/06/07,
    Dusseldorf 21/06/07, Manchester 17/08/09, London 18/08/09, LA 06/10/09, LA 07/10/09.

Ain't gonna be any middle anymore.
  • Yeah right, drinking a driving is fun.

Ok I can understand that, but 15-17 year olds are still drinking. Hell I was drinking at 16 and I didn't know anyone older than me when I went out to go drink. Kids now who are 17, who just got their licenses are still drinking and driving. I did a presentation about this in school this past year that I believe that if schools and parents would educate on how to drink responsibly and what to do in certain situations, we would be a lot better off. Schools and a lot of parents just say "don't drink" or "don't smoke pot", although they probably shouldn't, most teens are going to and I believe that the reason for these DUI/DWI's and fatal drunk driving accidents is because people do not know their limits or what to do in certain situations. For instate, my father always taught me not to drink but if I did there are certain things I should do. And those certain things have saved me as well as others when I drag them out of their car and drive them home.

As for the cigarettes thing, I dont know it was just an instinct that I "needed" something and I was at a gas station getting gas and saw them behind the counter...its not like I actually made a trip out of it to go get them.

Plus, I remember a stat that when the drinking age was 18 there was less fatal car accidents due to drunk driving.

Drinking age here is 16, and they don't even card. The smoking age is also 16. Although, if you really look young and not yet 16, they might ask for some id. Especially if you are buying hard liquor (I think you have to be 18 for that here). But most of the times you can just buy it, I have never been carded in my entire life.

You can get your driving license when you're 18, or 17 and 9 nine months or something like that.

That's my other arguement, look at all these European countries with drinking ges of 16,17, and 18. They don't seem to have the problems we do. I think the US is the only country with a 21 drinking age.

I'm right there with you my friend. Education always works better than prohibition. As you said, people are still drinking illegally and hiding it, then to keep up the charade, trying to drive home drunk to make a curfew. If you're drinking and your in a safe place stay there, if you're drinking and you aren't safe call a friend or a parent, the trouble you get in will be minor compared to what else could happen. Those of us with good parents are lucky to have had that guidance.

The earlier people learn moderation... the better.

Of course this is all a little different for people with addictive personality problems but I still don't like the way our drug laws are constructed.
