And/or if you have young kids, how do you get away to vote? (especially with long lines)

schools are closed on election day. imagine if all those kids had to wait in-line with their parents.

Because that is the real duty of every American citizen - work, don't ask questions, pay taxes, and pledge your allegiance.
    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

    They don't.

Polls in NJ open at 6am, about 30 people outside where I vote at 5:45am( I was on my way to work). If there wasn't a huge line I was going to vote first thing in the morning but I didn't want to be late. Since I get out at about 1:00 I figured I would be fine and vote then. I was, about 1minute and I was out of the building.

I do know people who voted before they went into work this morning, a few of my friends. They said it sure beats the line at 6pm and that is what they will do from now on. Getting up a little earlier is not a big deal.
Thats a lovely accent you have. New Jersey?

I took my daughter in with me, but it didn't take me any time at all. (I knew there was no line because I could look out the window of my house and see my polling place, lol.) I know I couldn't have waited in line with a 2 year old...I don't know how people do that.

 I wonder what they did all day long!

I'm thinking they made their way to NYC, and got into all kinds of crazy situations, Home Alone 2-style. ;)

The schools were closed here. I've never heard of that before, though. We always went to school on election day.

strange. i've never heard of schools closing because it's election day.

i wouldn't mind seeing election day becoming a national holiday. but if it never happens, no biggie.

and to the OP: what's the problem with finding a babysitter while you go vote?

Yeah, Greg said they always did that here.

I would like to see it either be a national holiday or see every state go to early voting.
