the county hasn't even apologized for the colossal screw-up yet...unbelievable.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/bal-mayor0807,0,4563211.story

When the shooting stopped, two dogs lay dead. A mayor sat in his boxers, hands bound behind his back. His handcuffed mother-in-law was sprawled on the kitchen floor, lying beside the body of one of the family pets that police had killed before her eyes.

After the raid, Prince George's County police officials who burst into the home of Berwyn Heights' mayor last week seized the same unopened package of marijuana that an undercover officer had delivered an hour earlier.

What police left behind was a house stained with blood and a trail of questions about their conduct. No other evidence of illegal activity was found, and no one was arrested at Mayor Cheye Calvo's home in this small bedroom community near College Park.....

    What a horrible story!

It doesn't make sense to me that the police would not announce themselves or knock before entering a home. If someone within the house owned guns and shot someone busting into their home unannounced, how could they be charged? It just doesn't seem smart to me for the police not to announce their identity. It puts them at risk if a homeowner thinks they are an intruder.

Fucking disgusting. Those cops deserve a little of their own medicine. Maybe they'll get it next time they bust into a person's residence unannounced. Karma is a bitch.

And I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for federal oversight on this one. The feds are the ones fomenting the fear against pot. I'm sure W thinks these cops are heros.

I agree. This is one of the worst things I've read. It's really sick some of the things that happen in this country.

"Chase was shot while running away from sheriff's deputies, Calvo said.

"He was hunted down and shot in the back while he fled," he said. "They didn't deserve to die. They don't deserve to be blamed for their deaths."

Calvo, 37, who has been mayor since 2004, was told to walk backward down the stairs with his hands in the air. He was wearing only boxers and socks. Police handcuffed him and placed him in the living room. His mother-in-law was also cuffed and made to lie on the kitchen floor next to Payton's body.

Police said they were allowed to enter the house without announcing their presence because Porter screamed and because they had a "no-knock" warrant. Calvo and his attorney, Maloney, say that is not true."

"The blood was horrendous," Calvo said. "They had tracked it everywhere."

The couple bought the corner lot home nearly three years ago and asked Porter to move from Utah to live with them about 13 months ago. On the front fence, supporters have draped an American flag banner that reads, "Cheye & Trinity We Support You." Dozens of people have written personal messages to the family on the banner.

Robert Kovalchik, a neighbor and Calvo's high school history teacher at Parkdale High School, said he was shocked that county officials had not apologized.

"This smacks of something from Nazi Germany," Kovalchik said.

Here's some other stories on this story from The Washington Post...Police Raid Mayor's Home and Kill His 2 dogs

This shooting happened about 2 miles from my home in Berwyn Heights where I drive through everyday. This could've easily been my home. The police apparently seized this package with drug sniffing dogs in Arizona addressed to the mayor and planted it at the mayor's home by undercover police dressed as dilivery men. His wife picked it up and took it inside, the police later raided the home with an apparent *no knock* warrant.

After his arrest the mayor demanded to see it but it was never shown to him until several days later. The police say they don't need a NK warrant if they deem the scene to be too dangerous.

The police have now cleared the mayor and his wife and have arrested two others but have not apologized. The drug dealers apparently used random addresses to cover their actions and would come back later to pick up packages claiming it to be wrongly addressed.

I hope they sue the daylights out of these assholes, they blotched another raid 2 months ago. They feel they do as they please the same ones who arrested me for no reason which later thrown out of court, the cretins.

Ironic they used animals (dogs) to catch them, and then they murder the animals (dogs) they find at the scene.

The police said they felt threatened and that's why they shot the dogs. Another reason why it would be better to announce who you are before entering and have a fucking WARRANT! In another incident they raided the WRONG address, a bunch of idiotic buffoons.

Fox News as much as one can believe them said the Prince Georges police have apologized to the couple which I haven't seen in The Post.

The couple has asked the FBI to investigate the PG police and the FBI rightfully so will investigate the methods of our local police. They have gotten away with to much already.

  • I read about something similar about a year ago. Apparently a bunch of states have, on the books, statutes that allow police to use something called a "no knock warrant", which means that the police can just run through your front door. In the story I read about last year, the police officer ran into a guy's house, and the guy shot him with a legally-owned handgun, which resulted in a bloodbath. I don't have a link to the article handy, sorry. How can anyone think this is a good idea? How can anyone think that this isn't going to result in old-West-style shoot outs?

At least where I live, dogs get caught in the police cross-fire a lot. The officer has the right to shoot any dog that he feels is a threat, but there's no hard-and-fast definition of what constitutes a threatening dog. My husband has bipolar disorder, and was off-the-wall nuts for most of last summer, and I had to call the police on him every week, for a while. The first thing I'd do, after I started talking to the dispatcher, was to secure the dogs someplace. Police also seem to be allowed some discresion about entering a house with a "threatening" dog- I had a lot of trouble getting one of the dogs away from my husband after a suicide attempt, and after some police cars were parked beside my house, I was trying to reassure them that it was OK to enter, even though they could see the dog through the window.
