A co-worker just told me that AirAmerica (liberal radio network) has filed for bankruptcy. I can't find anything on it. Is this true?

Air America To Declare Bankruptcy, But Progressive Radio Remains Strong
Air America Radio will announce a major restructuring on Friday, which is expected to include a bankruptcy filing, three independent sources have told ThinkProgress.
Air America could remain on the air under the deal, but significant personnel changes are already in the works. Sources say five Air America employees were laid off yesterday and were told there would be no severance without capital infusion or bankruptcy. Also, Air America has ended its relationship with host Jerry Springer.
The right wing is sure to seize on Air America’s financial woes as a sign that progressive talk radio is unpopular. In fact, Air America succeeded at creating something that didn’t exist: the progressive talk radio format. That format is now established and strong and will continue with or without Air America. Indeed, many of the country’s most successful and widely-syndicated progressive talk hosts — Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller, for instance — aren’t even associated with Air America.
Radio giant Clear Channel is so committed to progressive talk radio that, this week, it will announce a partnership with the Center for American Progress and MSS Inc. to conduct a nationwide search for the next Progressive Talk Radio Star.
UPDATE: Air America responds.
If Air America had filed for bankruptcy every time someone rumored it to be doing so, we would have ceased to exist long ago; it may be frustrating to some that this hasn’t happened. No decision has been taken to make any filing of any kind, we are not sure of the source of these rumors and frankly can not respond to every rumor in the marketplace.

And so has the conservatives. They can be viewed the same way because, really, that's what they are.

Did anyone start a thread on it yet? If so, I apologize for the double post. If not, please feel free.

Very disturbing games. Makes the republicans look better and better as the days count down to the next election.
How so? It was honest about the fact that it was agenda-driven. I certainly don't agree with the politics of the channel and find most of their programming to be ridiculous, but that's really no different than most of the blather on political talk radio. I liked the fact that I could choose not to support the station, as opposed to its sister-in-arms NPR that forces me to support them, regardless of their content.
Thanks for highlighting the typical problem with talk radio Kat! The story you posted is bogus, but that never stops these "reporters" from relaying it over the air waves and the Internet. The person behind this does not work for the RNC. See the updated source of that newswire here (with correction):

And the RNC response to Dean's letter is here:

All that said, I'm sorry to see that kind of crap going on in my home state.
How can that be?!?!!

Thanks for those links, farfromglorified...but I'm not sure that I see how it's completely bogus. Maybe you can explain it for me? Granted, the organizer (Wilkins I think) didn't work for the RNC but does work for the College Republicans National Commitee. Mr. Dean objected to RNC funding of that event through that organization, in addition to the fact that it's just not nice. Do we know for sure that the College Republicans National Commitee isn't funded by the RNC in any way, direct or indirect?
Thanks for any clarification.
Love,
Kat
I didn't mean to imply "completely bogus". The events described, for sure, are happening and while I think anyone should have the right to shoot at George Bush or Hillary Clinton cardboard cutouts, it is not a healthy form of political debate! However, the article (and I'd guess Air America's reporting of it) make this sound like it is an RNC-led event. Furthermore, I see absolutely no mention of that retraction elsewhere. The fallacy just continues on as it propagates through the collective conscious. I guarantee that at some point in the election cycle, this story will be used as ammo against the Republican National Committee here or on similar message boards and in the "independent" media and people will, unfortunately, accept it as absolute fact.
That I don't know. I can't imagine that this group doesn't get at least some indirect funding or support from the RNC, but that doesn't absolve the report of its errors. I live in a very liberal college town and have witnessed George Bush effigy burnings and similar stye hate-based events organized by similar groups on the left that also arguably get support from the DNC. But the fact that those events are not directly sanctioned or supported by the DNC makes a huge difference in my mind.
Of course, events like this should get attention -- they are unhealthy and uncalled for. But they need to get ethical attention as opposed to political attention. AirAmerica reports this so that they can hold it up and say "look how depraved the other side is!". Of course, conservative outlets would do the same with similar events on the left. And neither would report the converse, which really makes you wonder how "appalling" they actually find this behavior.
I don't see how it matters. the RNC chairman clearly denouced the activities. The RNC cannot stop all activites from every organization it supports, directly or indirectly. It sounds to me that if the RNC does fund the CRNC it might reconsider because they do not support such events.
"I wholeheartedly agree with you that the activities you cite in your letter are reprehensible. The individuals apparently responsible for or involved in these activities, however, do not work for the RNC, nor has the RNC been involved in such events."
I also find it ironic, as the chairman did, that Howard Dean should even being saying anything in the first place. lets mention his comments...
“I hate the Republicans and everything they stand for …” (Dana Milbank, quoting DNC Chairman Howard Dean, “Dean’s Past As Prologue To DNC Future,” The Washington Post, 1/30/05)
“[R]epublicans … a lot of them have never made an honest living in their lives.” (DNC Chairman Howard Dean, Remarks At Campaign For America’s Future “Take Back America” Conference, Washington, D.C., 6/2/05)
“I’m tired of the ayatollahs of the right wing…”(Josie Huang, “Dean Calls For End To ‘Culture Of Corruption’,” DNC Chairman Howard Dean, Portland [ME] Press Herald, 10/23/05)
“[T]he RNC…they love to play the victim. The truth is they are a white Christian Party.” (DNC Chairman Howard Dean, ABC’s “The View,” 9/15/05)
“[T]hey [Republicans] all behave the same. They all look the same…It’s pretty much a white Christian party.” (Carla Marinucci, quoting DNC Chairman Howard Dean, “In S.F., Dean Calls GOP ‘A White Christian Party,’” San Francisco Chronicle, 6/7/05)
IMO Howard Dean is very un-American and I can never see myself following his lead.
No offense meant, but it sounds like you just did:
"IMO Howard Dean is very un-American"
Howard Dean is an American. He may not be a political idol of yours (or of mine), but the man is entitled to say what he'd like (regardless of how silly it might be).
I dont see how spreading hate is american but i guess your right, its allowed. I digress
Thank you again, far. The spiral of hate is definitely out of control and the people feeding it need to stop. Just to be clear, criticism is not hateful or unAmerican if done respectfully. It is required. Our political process is in the hands of "consultants" and is going down the drain. If we're to be a country of the people, honorable citizens in a global world...we can all lead by example, even in little ways, instead of following a negative path. Every little bit helps and the more that join that movement, the better.
Peace and Love,
Kat
Certainly America has no monopoly on spreading hate! But to be an American is to be a human being of American descent. And many of those humans like Howard Dean do choose to spread hate more than others. That may make him a fool, but it does not make him un-American. He deserves the respect that all human beings deserve. Just don't let his hate (or the hate of anyone) to earn him your vote.
Cool. Couldn't agree with the above statements more.
Be well,
-Jeff
