In the wake of the violence that has been occurring in Kenya, I've been looking into some ways that I could help a few of the citizens of Kenya to not only recover from the country's recent turmoil but also to continue their work towards building a stable, healthy society free of such frivolous chaos and violence. As part of that research, I've discovered a very small, private non-profit organization that has been doing work with women and children in Takaungu, Kenya. The East Africa Center, founded in Seattle, is seeking to increase the health and literacy of Kenyans in this small community outside of Mombasa. The organization operates the Vutakaka Community Center which includes a school for both child and adult literacy programs, a health clinic that provides basic health services as well as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria education, and a sewing and agricultural center to help provide income to those living in or near the village. They are desperately seeking funds to help expand their over-crowded school as the Kenyan government continues to fail in its promise to deliver education to all Kenyan children.

The non-profit East Africa Center is currently privately funded -- it receives no government grants. It relies entirely on individual donors and institutional grants from organizations like the Gates Foundation. While I am planning on becoming one of those individual donors, I thought it might be nicer to make the entire board a donor instead and make a gift to this organization from "The Friends of Pearl Jam". As part of that effort, I will let you determine my funding level - I will match whatever dollar amount you pledge.

If you would like to participate in this effort, please complete the form on this website or contact me via PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to directly help ordinary Kenyans continue their struggle to achieve the success and stability we all take for granted.

Thank you for your consideration and any help you can provide.

Best,

-Jeff
