Are they going to draw the line somewhere here?

I want a bailout for my beer consumption. Maybe I should ask the gov't.

is the irony here that government is bailing out government?

This is getting ridiculous. I agree when do we draw the line. Cities are just going to have to tighten their belts just like most companies and individual Americans are doing.

    Yes, that's def ironic.

The thing that bothers me is Philadelphia is involved. Here's why I think it's crazy. Philly has a huge education/healthcare industry. That's not going to get hit hard from this mess. Moreover, they have a diverse structure and aren't terribly exposed to housing. Lastly, the Phillies just won the Championship and injected tons of cash into city coffers. Why the F is Philly leading this charge?

Because everyone wants their turn to stick their hand in the cookie jar.

If someone was standing on your corner handing out free money you would probably go get some even if you really needed it or not. Unfortunately in this case the government is handing out our money.

    ps. empty your PM box.

    That's true.

Probably because Philly, like all large metropolitan areas, relies heavily on property taxes to meet their budgets.

And like all large metropolitan areas, property values probably took a nose dive, putting a serious strain on the municiple budget, by drasticaly lowering tax revenues.

I wrote about this extensively in the "how bad will it get" thread.

    :(

Because they have been dragging their feet in regards to getting casinos built in Philly for the last 2 years and now have a budget which includes money generated from said casinos which are no where near close to being built.... also as stated above with regards to property taxes, real estate transfer fees and taxes and all of the other mundane sources of income a city has....

I going to open a comic book shop and run it into the ground as soon as possible so that I can make my claim on the bailout money.

Everyone better hurry and destroy a business with mismanagement soon before all the money is gone.

Detroit is about 2 years away from turning into a “life imitating art” version of Robo Cop. OCP can set up in GM’s nice building when they have to liquidate it.

I just hope they sneak the Red Wings to Fort Wayne before the shit goes down.

Didn't they fix up downtown pretty nice fairly recently?

Greek town is nice. I was at the MGM Grand and even though Tiger's Stadium was only ten blocks away the hotel staff made it sound like I would be risking my life by walking it after the sun goes down. I opted for a cab instead.

Detroit is in very rough shape.

It would have been a great halloween outfit to dress up like him and call yourself the federal government.
