Economic Collapse,... and the Election

I hope this does not continue. 700 decline on the Dow.... AGAIN!

Anyway, how do you think this will play out election-wise? Personally, I think everyone would agree that an economic slowdown helps Obama. However, an economic collapse? I think that may actually help McCain because people will panic.

What do you think?

Either way, I hope thinks improve... this is a mess.

If there is a collapse how does that help McCain? Won't most people point the blame at the current admin and figure McCain will just lead us further into the abyss?

I don't get how that would help McCain either. mind expanding on that thought?

and as of right now, the Dow has dropped over 800 points today :(

the only good thing is that the price for a barrel of oil is under $90, but shit, 800 POINTS?? and it's only 3 p.m. ET, can it get any worse?

That may be the case. I'm not sure. That's why I asked the question... I don't know.

I thought that people would get shook and demand more experience (regardless if the experience is BS or not)... that's all. Is that def what will happen? I don't know. I hope we don't have to find out.

Oil is only declining because the dollar is rising as foreigners flee risky currencies. This shows you this thing is international and not just a U.S. thing.

Economic problems will help Obama no matter how bad it gets. McCain has already portrayed himself as being out of touch with the economy. His statements and actions in the past few weeks in regards to this meltdown have pretty much sealed his fate. Short of a complete Obama fuck up or some miracle Wall St turn around I don't see a win for McCain.

really you think the dollar is rising? I really don't know much about this, so don't take that as a sarcastic or smart-ass comment. I understand it's international cause other markets are being hit, but with the way our market is going you still think the dollar is going up??

yeah I see the OP's point ... if we just had ecnomic woes, Obama gets the nod ..... but a DISASTER, people might be scared off by the junior senator ... I can see that argument (so, expect the McCain camp to go BACK to running on experience?)

But coming on the heels of the McCain camp stating "now that the bill is passed, let's put the economy discussion behind us" and then going into pesonal attack mode ... I mean, again, just horrible timing by McCain yet again ...

As stated in other threads, people are going to go for whichever of the two they feel more conifdent will help their 401k or pocketbook ... regardless of Wright, Keating, Rezko, et al ...

The dollar is actually at a 13 month high right now.

Yes. Just like Treasury yields are going down. It's a flight to safety. That doesn't mean we aren't getting smacked in the face. It just means when other countries get smacked in the face our dollar's value increases because they have the most faith in us in risky times. If this was isolated in the U.S. that would not be occurring.

so people around the world love to criticize us and scold our government but they come running to us in times of trouble?

I don't think it's that they come running to us. Treasury bills have always been a very sound investment and even people here in the states have decided to invest in them instead of the market because of the low risk.

If within a month's time, the economic collapse leads to out and out anarchy and violence in the streets, then yeah, such violence and disorder would probably help McCain. Other than that, I see such misfortune aiding Obama more than McCain.

I dont think that the economy getting worse will do anything but help Obama.. there is no way people are going to vote for Mr. I Don't Know Shit About the Economy, aka McCain.. regardless of Obama's experience.

And if he continues this not wanting to talk about the economy BS he is just digging his political grave deeper and deeper.

I think tomorrow's debate will be extremely important for the McCain Campaign. If he can come out and prove to the public that he has a grasp on the financial crisis he can bounce back. If he comes out though and blunders along with the economy as he has in recent weeks, I think his chances are all but over. With less than a month left this is his make or break moment.

Same goes for Obama. If he goes in tomorrow and firmly wins this debate, McCain is pretty much done.
